An IPv6-only DNS Root Tested -- Yeti DNS Project Officially Launched

2015-06-24 09:52 2055

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, June 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On 23 June 2015, reporters in attendance at the 53rd ICANN, held in the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires, were informed that the Yeti DNS Project (www.yeti-dns.org) has officially been launched in China, America, Japan and Europe.

Initiated and launched by Beijing Internet Institute (BII), WIDE Project and TISF, a collaborative engineering and security project by American internet pioneer Paul Vixie, Yeti DNS is an experimental operation project based on new technical architecture of the IPv6 root system.

The success of today's internet owes a lot to the 'One World, One Internet, One Namespace' philosophy, and the top level of the unique identifier system, the DNS root system, has been operational for 25+ years. As a result it is considered somewhat old-fashioned in terms of stability. It is hard to test and implement new ideas in an effort to evolve to a more advanced level and counter challenges like IPv6-only operation, DNSSEC key/algorithm rollover and scaling issues. In order to make the test more practical, it is also necessary to involve highly diversified user environments to study the effect of the changes in question.

To benefit the development of the Internet as a whole, the proposal of the Yeti Project was formed to build an experimental live IPv6 DNS root system to discover the limits of DNS root name service and deliver useful technical output.

Interested parties in this community such as individual researchers, university labs, companies and institutes are welcome to join the project as Yeti root server operators (at least 25 operators), recursive name server operators, and individual researchers. It is expected that Yeti Project can also gain support from vendors, for example DNS software implementers, CPE & IoT device developers, and middle box developers who can test their product and connect their own testbed into the Yeti testbed.

The Yeti DNS project is loyal to the IANA as the DNS name space manager and all IANA top-level domain names will be precisely expressed in the Yeti DNS system, including all TLD data and meta-data. All Yeti project founders hope to inform the IANA community by peer-reviewed science as to future possibilities to consider for the IANA root DNS system.
