The Awards are Asia's only independent, performance-based Awards. Winners are chosen by a panel of judges of industry professionals and Telecom Asia editors, and backed by financial analysis by IDC, one of the world's leading ICT research firms.

"We are honored to accept this Award, which is a testament to the entire Asia Netcom team, whose commitment to service excellence ensures the best network performance and reliability for our customers," said Bill Barney, Chief Executive Officer, Asia Netcom. "Much credit goes to our team members who demonstrated professionalism, dedication and perseverance in times of crisis, such as last December's earthquakes in the Luzon Strait, which contributed to our successes over the past year."

"This Award is a tribute to Asia Netcom's continued investment in its subsea cable network," said Robert Clark, Telecom Asia Contributing Editor and Convener of the judging panel. "Its recent infrastructure upgrades have given ANC one of the most robust networks in the region, capable of withstanding severe shocks such as the Boxing Day earthquake, and its success in the Telecom Asia Awards shows this is being recognized by the industry."

Asia Netcom's EAC cable system is configured with multiple rings to maximize route diversity and path redundancy and was the only subsea system that was rapidly restored following the earthquakes that disrupted all other major cable systems in the region on 26-27 December 2006. Despite multiple cuts to the system, Asia Netcom's network operations team was able to reroute traffic over other parts of the network and restore services in a matter of hours. This ability not only helped Asia Netcom customers get back online quicker, but was instrumental in keeping the region connected to the Internet in the weeks that followed. As the only cable system in service, Asia Netcom helped the majority of carriers in the region restore some degree of connectivity to their end users.

Major network projects accomplished during 2006 also include a complete upgrade of the core network platform to Lucent's LambdaUnite(R) Multi-Service Switches together with a tripling of the capacity of the core network.
