CCID Consulting Analyzes Demand Features and Application Difficulties in China's SOA Industry

2007-08-23 15:04 1470

BEIJING, Aug. 23 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China's leading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, and the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong (Hong Kong Stock Exchange: HK08235), releases its article on the demand features and application difficulties in the service-oriented architecture (SOA) Industry.

With the deepening publicity and penetration of SOA, almost everyone is familiar with it. The public is no longer discussing what SOA is and whether or not to use it. The value and benefit of deploying SOA have been widely recognized. When and how to implement SOA have become the focus of vendors and users.

Through its questionnaires, sent to 536 enterprises and organizations throughout China, CCID Consulting has gained insight into the current status of Chinese enterprises implementing SOA and SOA's future application tendencies. CCID Consulting's survey shows that about 25% of enterprises have taken actions relating to SOA, including internal SOA training, developing SOA architecture blueprints as well as SOA single point applications, et al. The SOA deployment foundation of Chinese enterprises is rather weak. Its standards having not been finalized in China, SOA has low recognition among management. SOA's business value is not clearly visible, which is likely to hinder its deployment in the future. The survey shows that among all enterprise that have deployed SOA, SMBs are also likely to have deployed single point applications as well. Thus, it can be concluded that the application of SOA has no direct association with company size.

In regards to the increasingly eye-catching development of SOA, China enjoys different opportunities and conditions from other countries that are developed in terms of information construction, including the United States. Most US enterprises have had improved application systems. When implementing SOA, they need to extract and package functionalities of existing systems in order to standardize services, instead of creating new services with high-cost standardized methods. However, as for Chinese enterprises, the changing market has pushed enterprises to constantly change their IT systems for services. Over 90% of the software system construction is consolidation, optimization and restructuring. Different from foreign enterprises, Chinese enterprises are now changing from production-oriented systems to marketing- and service-oriented ones. The construction of service-oriented systems will be the focus of SOA construction in the future.

Among the early adopters of IT systems, enterprises in financial and telecom industries have built a large number of production systems. With the further opening up of the business market in accordance with WTO requirements, competition has become increasingly fierce. Enterprises in financial and telecom sectors have started to transfer their business system construction from being service-oriented to being customer-oriented. The creation of new systems is just around the corner. Government and manufacturing industries have started to invest in services and software, instead of hardware. Compared with the mature international market, the Chinese market is short of software systems and still in the early or medium-stages in terms of construction. In China, because of changing business demands and un-standardized software development in its early stages, existing systems are difficult to standardize and therefore cut into SOA services. However, the construction of new systems has helped to create new demand for SOA applications. Fine-grained standardized service systems with flexible architectures can be created directly.

As opposed to the international environment where the application of SOA is further penetrating, China is still quite weak in terms of SOA implementation foundation from the aspects of both technology and practical application. The formulation of SOA standards is still controlled by international vendors. The involvement of a few domestic manufacturers in China means they cannot make radical changes to current pattern of competition. What's more, application experiences and talent shortages are the critical challenges faced by China. Having no highly-developed industrial solutions and having shortages of necessary skilled personnel for both vendors and users are problems that cannot easily be solved on a case-by-case basis. The application of SOA is the only way to go. However, when and where to deploy are the issues enterprises must face. Clearly defined deployment and a customized deployment route are the best way to avoid waste. The increasing recognition of SOA in the market has helped to bring about new opportunities for the development of software industry in China. However, it also creates new research topics for both vendors and users alike.
