CCID Consulting Analyzes the Competition between Notebook Computer and Smart Phones

2008-10-13 14:54 1826

BEIJING, Oct. 13 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China's leading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, and the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong (Hong Kong Stock Exchange: HK08235), recently released its article on the competition between notebook computers and smart phones.

Atom 'Menlow' released by Intel is used for super portable PC and MID (Mobile Internet Device) devices, which is expected to enter the set-top box and smart phone market ultimately. From the PC industry, Nano of VIA, Bobcat of AMD, and developers of other similar products are all paying close attention to this segment market. Low power consumption and small size CPU are Atom Menlow's selling points. The competition between notebooks and smart phones is escalating. Notebooks are facing the challenge from smart phones.

The terminal equipment market flourishes with the development of cloud computing, construction of network, as well as improving battery performance. However, notebooks are in dilemma. Smart phones are more active on the other hand, benefiting from development of wireless application technology and network upgrading, more and more applications and services turn to online delivery and data storage and computing capacity are provided by online application service providers. Performance gap between notebook and smart phone due to device size limitation can hopefully be eliminated. Network TV, video conference, and other applications are to be vividly portrayed as the construction of 3G network in China. Most of current online display technologies such as flash, sliver light, are based on X86 architecture, which results in unsatisfactory user experiences in mobile net surfing and multimedia applications. However, this problem will be resolved in the near future as a large number of companies are working in smart mobile phone chip field to replace RISC architecture based ARM chips. It seems that smart phones will take the place of notebook.

Looking at the third decades of web, more and more local desktop applications are run in Internet Explorer. In this case, Internet Explorer has been the window where Office Live, Google Docs, Zoho, ThinkFree, DabbleDB, Basecamp, and other desktop office applications are delivered to us. It is IE that changes the world. The person who controls explorer, will control the terminal.

UMPC and MID are the outcome notebook developers will deploy to meet with challenges from smart phones. In the Internet oriented application environment, notebook has advantages in net surfing experiences and office efficiency. It is necessary for notebook companies to achieve balance between portability and using experience. Eee PC of Asus, which succeeds in integrating necessary functions within a delicate body size and receives great attention from the market, is a rudiment of future products. Although performance of Eee PC is not entirely satisfactory, notebooks will control the development of Internet Explorer in this way.
