CCID Consulting: Who Will Lead the Projector Market?

2007-10-16 18:16 1977

BEIJING, Oct. 16 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China's leading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, and the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong (Hong Kong Stock Exchange: HK08235), releases its article on the projector market.

There was a recent announcement from the PC industry that Acer had purchased the American PC manufacturer Gateway, leading Acer to occupy third place in the global PC market. Acer later officially declared with Digital China, the magnate of IT distributors in China, that both sides will set up a strategic partnership in projectors and Acer projectors would fully enter the China market with Digital China acting as the sole general agent in China. Only a couple of days after that, the professional Japanese brand, EIKI also reached an agreement with Digital China for a strategic partnership in the China projector market. Thus there will be many powerful competitors in the China projector market, including some pre-existing famous brands such as HP and Lenovo. Many big IT manufacturers are scrambling for this market with new products being launched one after another. Who will be the final winner? Only the market will provide the answer.

According to the statistics by CCID Consulting, the sales volume in China projector market reached 242,000 in the first half-year of 2007 with a revenue of 3.16 billion Yuan. The number is presumed to be 655,000 with 8.36 billion Yuan for the whole year.

It can be deciphered from Figure 1 that the China projector market is growing fast in recent years with an annual growth rate of over 30%. This speed is very rare, even for other hardware, and it could be the reason for the fierce competition between so many famous IT manufacturers in China either from abroad or home companies. CCID Consulting presumes that this market will still keep a high growth rate in the following 5 years.

Although all projector manufacturers are making a greater effort in marketing to gain more shares in this fast growing market, hardly any of them could obtain predominance, according to the research by CCID Consulting. None of them got over a 20% market share in 2006, and was reasonably well shared among all participants.

Who will lead the market during its rapid progress? Could it be Epson or Toshiba with their dominant position? NEC or BenQ with more after effect? Or some other latecomers? CCID Consulting tends to agree that more effort needs to be made in three directions to get the advantage in the projector market:

First of all, no matter whether it's LCD or DLP, manufacturers need to design products suited to many different people, intelligent products designed to fulfill new user demands and win a greater share in the market. Traditional DLP projector manufacturer, BenQ, recently launched its first LCD family projector to a very good market response. The integrated technology of LCD and DLP allows different manufacturers to possess different advantages.

Secondly, the distribution channels are tending to become more flat with lower requests for access to technology. Channel has now become a focus of competition among manufacturers. All manufacturers are exploring their best channel strategy, from the "Holding Hands for Ten Years" by Toshiba and Digital China to the "Win-Win Cooperation" of NEC and ECS Technology. They take different channels in different segmentations and improve the professional level of these channels, as only a professional distribution service will succeed against competitors.

Finally, the homogeneity of a product turns out to be stronger with the enlargement of market size, the service thus becomes more important. The industry market is getting more demand for higher-quality service and the family market is also asking for customized service. Companies are all trying harder in terms of gaining more complete networks, upping the professional level and lowering service costs, as good service is always the trump card in keeping up a good brand image.
