Chartered Secretaries Elect Mrs April Chan as President for Second Term

Key areas for 2011:

  • Launch Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (Mandatory CPD)
  • Promote Chartered Secretary profession among local employers
  • Continue development of the profession in Mainland China
  • International development and influence

The Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries (HKICS) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 9 December 2010 during which Council members for the ensuing year were duly elected (see attached HKICS Council list). The AGM was followed by a Council meeting during which the office bearers were elected (see list attached) with April Chan, Company Secretary of CLP Holdings Limited being elected as President again for 2010/2011. 

"I am honoured to be asked to serve as President of the Institute again. In the coming year we will continue to focus on the following four big areas," said April Chan FCIS FCS(PE).

- Quality assurance of Chartered Secretary profession - mandatory CPD programme scheduled for launch in August 2011

- Promotion of the value Chartered Secretaries can bring to business

- Development of the Chartered Secretary profession in Mainland China - the Chinese language qualifying scheme is to be launched in the Mainland within the next few years, and

- Development of Chartered Secretary profession internationally - we will continue to support Corporate Secretaries International Association (CSIA) with its campaign to introduce a separate Head in the Services Sectoral Classification List of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and co-operate with the Global Corporate Governance Forum, a World Bank/International Financial Corporation initiative, to produce a company secretaries' toolkit.

The Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries (HKICS) is an independent professional body dedicated to the promotion of its members' role in the formulation and effective implementation of good governance policies in Hong Kong and throughout Mainland China as well as the development of the profession of Chartered Secretary.

HKICS was first established in 1949 as an association of Hong Kong members of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) of London. It became a branch of ICSA in 1990 before gaining local status in 1994 and today has more than 5,400 members and approximately 2,900 students.
