POTSDAM, Germany, June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Internet functionalities are explained in Chinese in an open online course from the German Hasso Plattner Institute, at the University of Potsdam (HPI). Registration is now possible for "Internet-working" on https://openhpi.cn.

The course introduces the technological base and explains the elements enabling communication within the Internet. These include functional principles and technologies of data transmission, standards and the TCP/IP reference model and its protocols and applications.

What appears complicated is clearly explained by instructional videos and presentations. Self-tests, homework and weekly tests reflect learning progress. Interested parties from every background interested in computer science and with a desire to increase their marketable IT skills are invited to join. Successful course completion is rewarded with an HPI certificate.

As forerunner in Europe the HPI has offered openHPI since 2012 as an interactive online education network with state-of-the art tools for knowledge transfer. Its virtual campus offers open online courses on different aspects of information technology in English, German and Chinese. Meanwhile, openHPI has more than 110,000 enrolled learners from 114 different countries, who are actively exchanging their knowledge in openHPI forums.

The HPI is Germany's university excellence center for IT Systems Engineering. SAP Co-founder Prof. Hasso Plattner founded the HPI in 1999 and has financed it entirely ever since. The institute offers 470 bachelor and master students a practical and engineering-oriented computer science program. HPI carries out high level research in its nine topic areas, as well as at the HPI Research School for PhD candidates, with its further branches in Cape Town, Haifa and Nanjing. HPI closely cooperates in the field of cloud computing with Shanghai University and in education of "Design Thinking" University of China.
