Dow Donates RMB 2 Million to China Earthquake Relief

SHANGHAI, China, May 16 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- The Dow Chemical Company announced today that it will donate RMB2,000,000 (US$286,000) to support relief efforts in China’s earthquake stricken areas.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit the Wenchuan County of China’s Sichuan province at 2:28 p.m. on May 12. The earthquake affected many regions in China and has caused massive damages and resulted in thousands of casualties and injuries.

Immediately after the crisis, The Dow Chemical Company launched an earthquake relief donation initiative. Andrew N. Liveris, Dow Chairman and CEO discussed the initiative with Dow China’s management team and made a speedy decision to donate RMB2,000,000 through Red Cross China toward disaster relief and to support rebuilding in the affected areas.

“On behalf of everyone at Dow, I would like to extend our most heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the people affected by the quake. Our hearts and thoughts go out to them. We hope our donation efforts can help bring relief.” Jim McIlvenny, President of Dow Asia Pacific & Greater China said. “We also want to call on more companies to contribute to the relief effort. This is our duty as China’s corporate citizens.”

In parallel with the company donation, Dow Greater China has also established an employee matching gift program. Donations made by employees in China will be matched dollar for dollar by the company. The Company will also set up a donation platform for employees in the United States.
