FOCUS GERMANY at the 11th Shanghai International Film Festival

BEIJING, June 3 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- For the fourth time, German Films is organizing FOCUS GERMANY at the coming Shanghai International Film Festival from June 14 to 22 in Shanghai. In the past three years, FOCUS GERMANY has become an important event at the festival and has given the Shanghai audience an overview of present German filmmaking.

FOCUS GERMANY will open with a cocktail reception and a screening of BLIND SPOT by Tom Zenker on June 16, 2008. The German General Consul and German Films, in cooperation with Swiss Films, will invite German, Swiss and Chinese filmmakers to attend the cocktail reception.

Other films to be screened as part of Focus Germany are AND ALONG COME TOURISTS by Robert Thalheim, RUNAWAY HORSE by Rainer Kaufmann, COUNTERPARTS by Jan Bonny, RABBITS WITHOUT EARS by Til Schweiger, LISSI AND THE WILD EMPEROR by Bully Herbig, LITTLE PARIS by Miriam Dehne, MELODIES OF SPRING by Martin Waltz, NOTHING BUT GHOSTS by Martin Gypkens, TRADE by Marco Kreuzpaintner and FAMILY RULES by Marc Meyer.

A number of other German films will be screened over the course of the festival. German film MY MOTHERS TEARS by Alejandro Cardenas-Amelio has been invited to screen in competition at the festival. TO THE LIMIT by Pepe Danquart will screen as part of the Sports program, while the Panorama program will showcase DAYS IN BETWEEN by Lola Randl, DIE EISBOMBE by Oliver Jahn, LOVE COMES LATELY by Jan Schutte, RED ZORA by Peter Kahane, VIRUS UNDEAD by Wolf Wolff, A TIME FOR FISHES by Heiko Aufdermauer and the short film APPASSIONATA by Mirko Echghi-Ghamsari.

Several German film industry professionals will also participate in the festival.

Well-known German producer Ulrich Felsberg has been invited to sit on the International Jury at the Shanghai International Film Festival. Ulrich Felsberg has worked with award-winning, high-profile German and international directors such as Wim Wenders and Ken Loach over the course of his career.

Rainer Kaufmann, Jan Bonny, Martin Waltz, Miriam Dehne, Marc Meyer and Pepe Danquart will travel to Shanghai to present their films to the audience. Producers Jakob Clausen (TRADE, BLIND SPOT) and Ina Kersten (LITTLE PARIS) will also attend the festival.

Focus Germany has developed into a major event at the Shanghai International Film Festival, with the support of the General Consulate of Germany and the Goethe Institute in Shanghai.

This year, German Films will cooperate with Swiss Films to host the Female Film-making forum on June 17. The event will bring female filmmakers from Germany, Switzerland and China together to discuss their craft with members of Shanghai Film Critics.

European Film Promotion will also offer a Sales Support Program for the presentation of European films at the festival.

German Films is part of the film market and offers buyers and sellers the opportunity to meet in the German Films suite at Crowne Plaza Hotel (suite 408). A number of German films achieved commercial and critical success at home and abroad in 2007 and 2008, such as:

-- German box office hit RABBIT WITHOUT EARS, which screened to more

than 6 million theatre-goers in Germany.

-- WHAT ABOUT FRED by Til Schweiger, which was sold to China after

it screened as the opening film for Focus Germany in 2007.

-- AND ALONG COME TOURISTS and COUNTERPARTS, which screened at the

Cannes Film Festival 2007.

-- German box office hit LISSI AND THE WILD EMPEROR, which screened

to more than 3 million theatre-goers in Germany.

-- New documentary TO THE LIMIT, which received the German Film Award

(LOLA) for Best Documentary in April 2008.
