HONG KONG, Sept. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- This Mid-Autumn Festival, get up close and personal with the "moon" in Victoria Park! In the Lee Kum Kee Lantern Wonderland, organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and sponsored by Lee Kum Kee, an imposing, six-storey-high moonlike lantern installation entitled the "Golden Moon" was lit up last night to spark off the HKTB's "Hong Kong Mid-Autumn Festival" promotion. The installation will be exhibited from 27 September until 2 October, offering an ideal photo-taking and gathering spot for local residents and visitors during this much-loved Chinese festival.
The light-up ceremony yesterday evening was performed by HKTB Chairman - Mr. James Tien, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development - Mr. Gregory So, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services - Mrs. Betty Fung, Acting Commissioner for Tourism - Miss Rosanna Law, Group Chairman of Lee Kum Kee - Mr. Lee Man Tat, Chairman and CEO of Lee Kum Kee Sauce Group - Mr. Charlie Lee, Managing Director (North Asia and Pacific Region) of Lee Kum Kee (International) Trading Ltd. - Mr. Jeffrey Lee, and the designers of the "Golden Moon" - Mr. Kristof Crolla and Mr. Adam Fingrut.
The "Golden Moon" is not only a showpiece in the HKTB's "Hong Kong Mid-Autumn Festival" promotion, but also part of the "2012 Hong Kong Design Year" programmes, as the design was selected through an open competition organised by the HKTB with the Hong Kong Designers Association, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects and the Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design.
The inspiration, according to the designers, came from the traditional Chinese lantern, and the Chinese name "Golden Moon" alludes to the joy associated with the festival. The warm glow emanating from the installation also highlights the love story between the iconic Moon Goddess of Immortality Chang'e and her archer husband Houyi. The installation measures 18 metres high and 21 metres across and sits in the middle of a pond. At night, the fabric enveloping the structure is lit up by LED lights to create different shades and effects in tandem with the music in the venue.
In addition to fabric and LED lights, the installation is made from steel, bamboo and wood, all of which will be reused or recycled. For instance, the stretch fabric will be donated to charitable and academic organisations after the event for educational purposes.
To further enrich the experience of spectators in the Lee Kum Kee Lantern Wonderland, a "Lantern Corridor" and a "Mid-Autumn Market" have been set up during the same period (from 27 September to 2 October), offering more beautiful sights, as well as festive foods and handicrafts. There will also be cultural performances on the main stage in the Lantern Wonderland on 28 and 29 September, and the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance will heighten the excitement on 30 September.
The "Hong Kong Mid-Autumn Festival" promotion is part of the HKTB's continuing efforts to bolster Hong Kong's festive appeal by promoting its colourful festivals and celebrations, and to encourage visitors to immerse themselves in the city's unique cultural experience and heritage.
