ALMATY, Kazakhstan, Feb. 16 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- The global economic crisis and US President Barack Obama's impact on East-West relations will be high on the agenda of the Eurasian Media Forum, to be held in Kazakhstan on April 23 - 24, 2009.

The Forum, now in its 8th year, is a unique annual event. It brings together several hundred politicians, business leaders, academics and journalists from around the world, many from Russia and the CIS countries, to discuss topical issues on the global news schedule.

President Nursultan Nazarbayev is expected to open the two-day conference in Almaty, Kazakhstan's commercial capital in the heart of Central Asia, symbolically located on the ancient silk route between China and Europe.

"The purpose of the Forum is to host a unique encounter between those who make the news and those who report it, from East and West, in the interests of international understanding," said Dariga Nazarbayeva, chair of the Eurasian Media Forum (EAMF) Organizing Committee.

The proceedings will be chaired again, as in most previous years, by British broadcaster Riz Khan of Al Jazeera International.

The EAMF agenda is always topical, driven by the latest news stories. It tackles political, economic and cultural issues of international and regional importance, and examines how they are covered by the media of East and West. Subjects on the table this year include:

-- The global economic crisis -- myth and reality

-- In search of the new capitalism

-- The new US Administration -- expectations and early results

-- Conflict and the failure of politics and the media, from Georgia to

Gaza

-- Booming blogosphere

Among professional media issues, delegates will discuss the challenges and threats posed by new technology and the new "virtual news services."

The detailed agenda and list of speakers will be announced closer to the event. Prominent participants at past sessions have included former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, ex-Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov, rival American strategists Richard Holbrooke (Democrat) and Richard Perle (Republican), former United States National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, former Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Wesley K. Clark, and other political and media figures from Europe, the CIS and Asia.

Senior representatives are also expected from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), political think-tanks, media companies and business corporations.
