MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J., June 2 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) Electronic Materials today announced the commercialization of new materials that improves the speed, durability, functionality and energy efficiency of certain touch-screen displays.
The new Planarizing Thermally Stable coating materials, sold as Honeywell PTS, expand the Electronic Polymers product line for flat panel displays.
"These new materials enable touch screen developers to improve performance of capacitive touch screen displays at a time when use of and interest in such displays is growing," said Rebecca Liebert, vice president and general manager for Honeywell Electronic Materials (HEM). "As an established leader in the development and production of planarizing materials for the semiconductor industry, HEM is committed to identifying the latest industry needs and offering the most innovative solutions."
Touch screens enable users to interact directly with items on the screen by detecting one or multiple simultaneous touches by fingers. They are increasingly being used in small applications such as cell phones and handheld video games, as well as larger screens. Capacitive touch screens operate by sensing changes in electrical fields and are considered to be the most durable of all touch screen types.
One key to good performance to such touch screens is planarization, which is the process of making certain surfaces of the screen absolutely flat. HEM is a leader in planarization materials for semiconductor manufacturing and has been adapting this technology for displays, especially LCD displays.
Honeywell PTS materials were originally designed and used for traditional Thin Film Transistor - Liquid Crystal Display (TFT-LCD) panels and further modified for this new application. Honeywell PTS materials are both a thermally and chemically stable material, allowing them to be integrated into various sophisticated display applications such as touch screens.
The new PTS materials offer competitive, cost-effective solutions while providing superb light transmittance and planarizing capabilities, which in turn translate to better quality of image and increased durability. In addition, the Honeywell PTS materials enable touch screens to be more energy efficient by reducing power consumption, a key requirement for mobile devices.
Honeywell PTS coating targets capacitive touch-screen technology. PTS enables touch screen developers to achieve a superb brightness as well as the "all-in-one substrate" fabrication process which lowers manufacturing costs.
Honeywell Electronic Materials, a part of Honeywell Specialty Materials, supplies microelectronic polymers, electronic chemicals, and other advanced materials that enable the integration of cutting edge processes at customer sites. Honeywell also maintains extensive product offerings under its metals business segment, including physical vapor deposition (PVD) targets and coil sets, precious metal thermocouples and materials used during back-end packaging processes for thermal management and electrical interconnect.
