SHANGHAI, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- A five-year partnership that educated nearly 500,000 children in more than 600 primary schools in China on child safety has today won Honeywell (NYSE: HON) and Safe Kids Worldwide-China the American Chamber of Commerce Shanghai 2009 Corporate Social Responsibility Partnership Award.
The award is for the Safe Kids @ Home Education Campaign which Honeywell and Safe Kids Worldwide-China launched in 2005.
The Honeywell Safe Kids education program is part of Honeywell Hometown Solutions, Honeywell's corporate social responsibility foundation. Honeywell Hometown Solutions offer communities exciting programs in five key areas: Science & Math Education; Family Safety & Security; Housing & Shelter; Habitat & Conservation and Humanitarian Relief.
AmCham Shanghai has organized this award initiative to recognize organizations for their outstanding corporate social responsibility programs. AmCham Shanghai announced the winners today at its 5th Annual AmCham Shanghai CSR Conference.
"This award goes to Honeywell employees and Safe Kids volunteers who have driven our program to such scale and success," said Shane Tedjarati, President and CEO of Honeywell China and India. "Safety has always been one of Honeywell's key brand promises. As a part of our Honeywell Hometown Solutions CSR initiatives, we have been partnering with the Safe Kids organization on the Safe Kids @ Home program for nearly five years. I'm proud that our joint efforts and Honeywell's world-leading safety and security technologies are enabling a safer environment for the communities and families in China. We sincerely thank AmCham Shanghai for the award."
The Safe Kids @ Home Education Campaign targets children ages 6-12 to arm them with the essential safety knowledge and to raise their awareness and skills in preventing injuries and accidents at home. "This is because injury is the number one killer of children ages 1-14 in China with over 50,000 deaths annually," said Mitch Stoller, President and CEO of the Safe Kids Worldwide. "We are fortunate to partner with Honeywell to raise a bar on fighting against this leading health issue among Chinese children. We are also proud to get the partnership award from AmCham Shanghai as it not only confirms the Honeywell and Safe Kids partnership but it encourages more social efforts to save children's lives."
The primary schools reached through this program are in the cities of Chengdu, Chongqing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Tianjin and Xi'an. A special curriculum was developed for schools in the Xiushui town, Sichuan province, affected by the devastating 2008 earthquake. This curriculum which teaches pupils how to keep themselves safe during an earthquake was held at the Honeywell United Primary School that Honeywell and its employees helped to rebuild. The school was opened in May this year.
