New Disney Online Mini Survey Provides Snapshot of China's Online Youth Culture

Inspired by "High School Musical China", the first survey looks at individuality and online purchases

SHANGHAI, June 8 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- In the first of a series of mini online surveys inspired by Disney's upcoming local movie production "High School Musical China", Disney China provides a glimpse into the thoughts of young netizens from top social networking site Kaixin.com, popular trend-setting blogs and over 10 discussion BBS' through a viral "chaoren" (trendy young adults) interview series hosted on http://www.hsmchina.com .

Over 1850 respondents who participated in the survey, 86.7% said they have purchased trendy items on the Internet. 79.1% agree that content from fashion bloggers and online fashion shop owners play an influential role in shaping their own styles and attitudes. 1/3 of the participants feel that the young adult generation today will get increasingly trend-conscious in order to seek their own individual styles in a constantly evolving cultural landscape. In a recent research study conducted by the Internet Society of China (ISC) in 2009, results found that the online shopping market reached a trade volume of 250 billion RMB in China.(1)

"Anyone can dress to impress if they can afford it and that's what they want, but I pick what suits me best," says Wei Xiao Mo, a popular fashion blogger who receives more than 5,000 page views daily and runs a successful online fashion store on Taobao.com as a full-time business, in her interview with http://www.hsmchina.com . The interview generated over 1150 responses from netizens that frequent the social networking destinations on which the story was posted. Some of the comments reflect viewpoints such as, "You are your own fashion style; big brands don't decide it for you".(2)
