- Nexteer Unveils High Availability EPS, Showcases Steer-by-Wire
FRANKFURT, Germany, Sept. 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Nexteer Automotive, a global leader in intuitive motion control, announced the continued expansion of its automated driving portfolio with the introduction of two steering technologies that enable advanced safety and functions for Level 2-5 automated driving. Nexteer's high availability Electric Power Steering (EPS) and its advanced Steer-by-Wire (SbW) system are showcased at the 67th IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany.
Safety-Net is Always On
"Similar to systems in aviation, our EPS system redundancies play an important safety, back-up function as the automotive industry moves toward varying levels of automation," said Frank Lubischer, Nexteer's CTO, CSO and Senior Vice President of Global Engineering, "Nexteer's steering safety net is always on."
Nexteer's high availability EPS is designed for resilient operational availability, using top-rated, high reliability components and intelligently optimized through additional redundancies in torque and position sensors, electronic control units, winding motors as well as dual sets of vehicle power and communication connectors.
High Availability EPS Facilitates Migration to SbW
"As OEMs continue investment in high availability EPS, the migration to Steer-by-Wire (SbW) becomes more cost-effective," said Lubischer. "Meanwhile, we enable easier SbW migration through our flexibility to support various packaging environments with our broad high availability EPS portfolio. An OEM can save a lot of investment and chassis redesign by leveraging our high availability EPS today with a future SbW migration in mind."
SbW: Gateway to New Safety Advancements & Automated Steering
SbW opens new possibilities for advanced safety functions, such as collision avoidance, stability control and more. Advanced safety features can be implemented with the steering system alone or in combination with the braking system to achieve even higher safety levels. To this point, Lubischer also noted that Nexteer & Continental's JV, CNXMotion, will combine Nexteer's advanced steering systems with Continental's advanced braking technologies into solutions for Automated Driving ADAS.
