SHANGHAI, June 10 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Tyco Electronics China has received a "Leading Enterprise" 2008 Golden Bee Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) China Award for its exemplary CSR practices in innovation for sustainable development. Gordon Hwang, Tyco Electronics Senior Vice President and Chairman of the company's China Business Council, attended the award ceremony and the Fourth CSR International Forum Roundtable to share Tyco Electronics' best practices in CSR.

The annual Golden Bee CSR China Award program is organized by China WTO Tribune -- a monthly magazine supervised by the Ministry of Commerce -- and the German government sponsored organization-GTZ. The "Golden Bee" concept was created to recognize enterprises that not only behave as good corporate citizens, but also spread CSR values through their business chains and among their stakeholders. CSR is driven by, and in turn is driving, business' long-term goals, which results in a win-win-win strategy for business, society and the environment. Three hundred guests from government, CSR research institutions, non-governmental organizations, multi-national corporations, and the media attended the ceremony and forum. Wang Chao, Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Commerce, and Serge Abou, Ambassador of EU to China attended the ceremony and made the opening speeches.

Of the 352 enterprises that entered the competition, just 12 were honored as "Leading Enterprises". Long Yongtu, former Vice minister of MOFCOM and Secretary General of Bo Ao Forum for Asia presented the awards to the leading enterprises and said, "I am glad that so many enterprises are awarded, which demonstrates that our enterprises in China not only obey the international business rules, but also identify with the most important value -- enhancing the social responsibility during the business growth."

To apply for the award, Tyco Electronics in China submitted its CSR best practices in areas including corporate governance, innovation technology, employee development, environmental protection, and supply chain. The judging committee extolled the company's entry on innovation, about which Hwang said, "Innovation is a core value of Tyco Electronics -- it's the foundation of the company and our mission as an industry leader." Tyco Electronics developed the first technical qualification for the USB port and made it the worldwide industrial standard. The company also created built-in cell phone antenna technology and succeeded in installing the world's first trans-continental undersea telecommunications system.

Operating in China for 20 years, Tyco Electronics committed to building local engineering capability from the outset -- demonstrating the spirit of an innovation-driven company by establishing an R&D center and laboratories in China, as well as fostering a culture of engineering excellence in China. In 2007, the company established its "alternative energy team" -- the team's first invention, a "concealed" solar junction box, has contributed tremendously to the mass application of solar energy technology. The team is now sending sales and R&D experts to Inner Mongolia to explore in depth how a wind mill farm works and to gather the voice of customers.

"We are enhancing and bringing our R&D advantage into energy and environmentally-friendly product design. The products we design in China even support our global market, and we are encouraged that our technology can contribute to the transformation from 'Made in China' to 'Created in China,'" said Hwang.

As part of cultivating innovation, Tyco Electronics has launched a series of company-wide initiatives to develop local talent through their career paths - providing overseas internships to outstanding college students in engineering disciplines, offering a one-year training program for engineering new recruits, building the global "engineering nest" to encourage interactive learning, emphasizing the technical career ladder and establishing a lifetime achievement award to highlight pre-eminent engineering contributions. These practices best demonstrate the company's commitment to talent development.
