FRANKFURT, Germany, July 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On July 15, 2015, the team representing Beijing's Tsinghua University was crowned overall champion of the 4th ISC International Student Cluster Competition, the second time the Chinese team has won the award after their victory at the inaugural event in 2012. Held at the 2015 International Super Computer Assembly (ISC15), this is also the second world championship won by Tsinghua University this year, following hot on the heels of their ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge triumph in May.

The ISC, ASC and SC Student Supercomputer Competitions are international supercomputer challenges and this year student teams from 11 universities from China, the US, Germany, Spain, India, South Africa, Brazil, and Estonia took part.

The aim of the three-day competition is for each team to complete the establishment and operation of a supercomputer system and complete performance competition of five application competition topics under the restrictive condition of 3000W total power. These competition topics involve science and engineering applications such as benchmark testing of floating point performance, the first principles, aerodynamics, large-scale parallel simulation of atoms and molecules and so on. In the end, Tsinghua University team won first prize overall with a relatively competitive advantage in total scores.

Gilad Shainer, President of ISC Competition Organizing Committee, said at the awards ceremony that he hopes the competition helps to promote the relationship between college students and the industrial community, and that participating team members felt suitably challenged by the competition. He went on to say he expects these young people to continue the innovation and passion of the competition in their future work, study and research.

In an interview given after the competition, Tsinghua team leader Song Fangrui said that the supercomputer competition combines machines with human beings, citing the team's excellent performance and cooperation and the stability of the Inspur server as the main reasons for their success this year.

In recent years, Chinese research and development of supercomputers has made great progress. Tianhe-2 is listed as the fastest supercomputer in the world while the country is also trying to promote application of super calculation and talent cultivation so as to narrow the gap with Europe and the United States. Meanwhile the ASC World Student Supercomputer Competition has become the biggest supercomputer competition in the world and Tsinghua University are worthy winners.
