Victorian Connection Event Links Alumni and Businesses in Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar, March 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 25 alumni from various institutions of higher learning in Victoria, Australia, together with business owners from Myanmar and Melbourne, attended the Victorian Connection event recently to network and stay connected.

Organised by the Victorian Government Business Office (VGBO), the Victorian Connection program in Myanmar aims to foster new trade and business ties between the State of Victoria and Myanmar.

"I am pleased to have met alumni members from various academic institutions in Victoria here in Myanmar. Melbourne continues to be the preferred destination for higher education for the people of Myanmar. Having lived and received high-quality education in Victoria, these alumni play a critical role in strengthening Victoria's relationship with Myanmar," said Celia Yeo, Acting Executive Director of Victoria State Government of Australia.

Yeo reiterated that, "There is tremendous potential for bilateral trade and investment between Myanmar and Victoria because of the links established through the alumni's experience in Victoria -- and we want to tap into these opportunities."

Currently, there are 250 students from Myanmar who are pursuing their tertiary studies at Victoria's world class universities, Vocational Education and Training (VET) institutes.

Mr Philip Htoo Htoo Aung Lin, Deakin University alumnus, spoke fondly of his experience in Melbourne, "I felt totally at home and I was touched by the warm Victorian hospitality during my stay in Melbourne. Melbourne has given me an opportunity to widen my view of the world and of course a good solid education." Mr Htoo is currently the Sales Director for a distributor of TATA vehicles.

VIP guests at this Victorian Connection event included the Australian Ambassador Designate His Excellency Nicholas Coppel, Mr Ross Bray, Senior Trade Commissioner, Austrade and Professor Helen Bartlett Provex President Monash University Malaysia.
