The idea of public vote competitions is not new in China. There have been many popular talent shows, such as the hugely successful Super Girls singing competition, which was loosely based on American Idol. But competition of ecommerce merchants is the first of its kind in China. Any online merchants who use YeePay's payment service can participate the competition as contestants. Some of YeePay's well-known merchants include EachNet (eBay China), Dang Dang, Bertelsmann, Skype, Shanda Entertainment, Kingsoft. Internet users can vote for their favorite online merchants based on several criteria: user interface and overall online shopping experience, selection of merchandise and prices, payment options and security, delivery speed and customer service quality. YeePay has also assembled a Board of Experts with its members coming from the co-organizers of the competition. The Experts will act as judges to critique on the participating merchants, to guide the users and facilitate the voting. The final winners will be announced in January 2008, the winning merchants will receive the awards from YeePay, as well as marketing dollars to promote online payment service.

The merchant competition is also backed by many co-organizers including China Internet Society, China Electronic Commerce Association, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), China Merchants Bank, KU6.com, Sina.com, Red Cross, Internet Weekly, BQ (magazine), Life Style (magazine), iResearch and DFJ Dragon Funds.

Online payment has been one of the fastest growing markets in China, the total transaction volume is expected to reach 100 billion RMB ($13.3B) in 2007, almost 200% increase over the previous year. YeePay's merchant competition marks the beginning of a new approach by combing the elements of entertainment with ecommerce. Now e-payment service can bring more values to merchants, not only by facilitating online transactions, but also by providing an effective marketing tool.
