At the press conference for the signing ceremony, Mr. Wang Ying, Deputy Mayor of the Yiwu Municipal People's Government, awarded a memorial medal to Yiwugou.com. Mr. Lou Xiaoming, Director-general of the Yiwu Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV, Press, Publication, and Sports, and Mr. Wang Jianjun, CEO of Yiwugou.com, signed the agreement conferring the title sponsorship. Mr. Zhou Meicai, Deputy Director-general of the Bureau, briefed the press on the city's preparations.

"As an open, inclusive international event, the Marathon is in tune with the character of Yiwu, which is also a highly inclusive city. Last year's event, the first Yiwu International Marathon in 2015, exposed the Yiwu Commodity Market to more friends from around the world. That's why we want to be the title sponsor this year. We do this as a way to promote sports, and to make Yiwugou.com more visible and recognizable globally. We are also hopeful that the spirit of the Marathon will encourage the Yiwu Commodity Market to be more entrepreneurial and innovative, so that it remains sustainable with healthy development," said Wang Jianjun.

The first Yiwu International Marathon, held on April 19, 2015, attracted widespread participation by nearly 10,000 marathon fans from 29 countries and regions, with close to 50,000 spectators. Building on its success, the 2016 Yiwu International Marathon has registered more participants. According to Zhou Meicai, this year's event, entitled "Run on the New Silk Road", has a total of 11,100 sign-ups, including 3,234 for the half-marathon, 5,469 for the mini-marathon, and 2,397 for the parent-child running event. The oldest runner is 80 years old, as opposed to the youngest one, who is only six. Athletes come from 38 countries and regions, and 165 of them are from abroad, including those from the "New Silk Road" countries such as Spain, Russia, France, and Poland. In addition, 64 teams and organizations, involving some 3,000 athletes, have signed up.

Considering that some marathon fans, due to quota limit or other reasons, will not be able to take part in the on-site race, there will be a first-time online marathon. On November 20, marathon fans across the globe can join the online Yiwu International Marathon in a real-time manner.

According to the Organizing Committee, the Yiwu International Marathon and the Madrid Marathon have established a sister city marathon partnership, under which the two sides seek to expand the partnership to cover other marathon cities along the Belt & Road, in a bid to promote international culture exchange and cooperation.
