China's Top Video and C2C Sites Team Up to Offer Richer Online Shopping

BEIJING, June 10 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Youku, China's leading Internet video website, today announced that it has partnered with the top Chinese e-commerce platform Taobao to offer a new video gallery feature for Taobao merchants. The service will launch in May, with Youku as the technology solution provider for the Taobao video gallery. The two companies will share revenues generated from this service.

Using Youku's application programming interface (API), trusted Taobao retailers will be able to showcase their products through an embedded Youku video player in their online stores. Service packages allow online merchants to choose from 5, 10, or an unlimited number of video clips on Taobao product pages, priced at RMB 10, 30, and 168 per month, respectively.

Besides generating additional revenue for both companies, this cooperation will benefit Youku by bringing Taobao users to the Internet video website. "Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) comprise a large proportion of products on Taobao. Most FMCG consumers match the demographic profile of Youku users well. 82% of Youku's users are between 18 and 40. Youku's advertisers will naturally love users for whom online shopping is an essential part of daily life," said Dele Liu, Youku's CFO.

Meanwhile, this cooperation will encourage Taobao retailers to adopt video to showcase their products, and help online consumers to access more detailed information about the products. When adding new merchandise to an online store, retailers who use the new service will be able to seamlessly upload video through Taobao's platform, allowing anyone browsing their online stores to watch the embedded video directly on Taobao's product pages.

"Taobao's new video service will help assure buyers about the quality of products they purchase online. Doubtless, video clips are much more detailed and persuasive than static pictures and text. It's time for us to move to the new stage of online shopping. The powerful API technology from Youku ensures us a stable video product gallery service," said Zhang Yu, Taobao's VP.
