BEIJING, Nov. 30, 2010 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Youku.com, China's leading video site, announced updated figures today showing that its online video application for the Apple iPad - which ranked as the #1 free download on Apple's Chinese iTunes Store only a week after its November 16 release – had been downloaded roughly 120,000 times, an average of 9,200 downloads per day. Youku's iPad app is the #1 iPad Entertainment app in the Chinese iTunes Store, and the related iPhone and iPod Touch app has been downloaded over 2.6 million times, or more than 9,000 times per day, since its release this March – more than any other video app in the Chinese iTunes Store.

The free applications, which run on iOS 3.0 and higher, bring over 10 million videos - including more than 800 high-definition films and television shows for iPad users - from the PC to the palms of users' hands, allowing users to view, share, and comment on videos wherever they are. Youku's offerings for the iOS platform continue the company's tradition of innovation in the mobile space, from being the first Chinese website to make its content available over 3G mobile networks in May 2009, to becoming the first video website in the world to make all of its content available natively on iOS devices in September 2010.

Most recently, Youku became the first Chinese company to use Apple's HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology for its mobile applications. HLS technology allows Youku to deliver high-quality streaming video with a great degree of flexibility across mobile networks, ensuring that whether viewers are using WiFi or cellular data networks, they always receive the best stream possible over their connection. The result: mobile video performance unsurpassed by any other internet video platform in China.

"We're committed to providing mobile users with an excellent experience," said Yao Jian, the CTO of Youku. "To that end, we've developed our own proprietary cross-coding technology so that we can serve videos on the fly to viewers accessing the site from any mobile device, and we are constantly evaluating new technologies, like Apple's HTTP Live Streaming, to find new ways of streaming video at faster speeds and higher bitrates."
