'Pixar: 25 Years of Animation' Exhibition to Open at Shanghai MoCA

A spectacular cross-medium showcase of over 400 items on display for the first time in Mainland China

SHANGHAI, July 25, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- The world-renowned 'Pixar: 25 Years of Animation' Exhibition will be brought to Mainland China for the first time for display at the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art from August 1 to October 30, 2011, presented by The Walt Disney Company China and organized by Taiwan New Aspect. Today, the real-size models of Sulley and Mike, two beloved characters from Disney•Pixar 's Monsters Inc. arrived at Shanghai, marking the start of the final preparation of the exhibition which open will on August 1.

More than 400 exhibits selected from the archives of Pixar Animation Studios will comprise an immersive art experience into the fascinating worlds, beloved characters and stories created by Pixar's world-class filmmakers. Traditional artwork in various mediums, maquettes, early animated short films, and one-of-a-kind media installations developed by Pixar Technical Artists will take guests on an eye-opening backstage tour on the creative processes behind some of the world’s most successful animated titles, such as "Toy Story 3", "Finding Nemo", "Wall-E" and "Up" that have become classics of our generation.

John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios and Principal Creative Advisor of Walt Disney Imagineering, said "People often don't realize how important traditional media like drawing and painting is to the filmmaking process at the studio because our films are computer animated. The artists here create hundreds, even thousands of pieces of art to help us discover our characters and worlds, and the work they do is just amazing. It wasn't until the exhibit was put together that we were able to share the original artwork with people outside the studio, and it's been tremendously exciting to see the show travel around the world. We are thrilled to finally get to bring it to mainland China."

"When people think about Pixar, they generally think of our films and how much they enjoy the stories we tell. They think about cutting-edge technology and stunning computer graphics. However, people aren't necessarily aware of the essential role that traditional art and design plays in our process. It's been fantastic to have this exhibit greeted so enthusiastically in so many countries and we are really looking forward to bringing it to Shanghai," said Elyse Klaidman, Head of Pixar University and Archive.

"Creativity, storytelling and technology are at the heart of what Disney does. We are very excited to share this immersive showcase of Pixar’s creative excellence with fans and families in Shanghai and from other regions," said Stanley Cheung, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of The Walt Disney Company, Greater China.

In addition to 'Pixar: 25 Years of Animation' Exhibition itself, a series of "Pixar Master Class" will be hosted at Shanghai Oriental Art Center on August 1st and 2nd. Five free different forums hosted by Head of Pixar University Elyse Klaidman, Pixar Texture Art Director Bert Berry, Technical Director Shen Chen, Digital Matte Designer Paul Topolos, and Special Effect Artist Yu Meng will share their experience and stories with audience.
