LONDON, October 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ --

QS Mainland China University Rankings 2019

QS Quacquarelli Symonds have today released their first standalone ranking of Mainland China's universities. The results emphasise the research strength of Mainland China's higher education sector, with 49 of its top 50 institutions receiving QS's top rating - very high - for research output.

Tsinghua University is named Mainland China's leading institution, while only two of the top 10 do not belong to China's C9 league: Sun Yat-Sen University (8th) and Wuhan University (9th). The results indicate that C9 universities generally enjoy outstanding regard among employers, compared to other Mainland institutions, but that individual institutions can compete with China's top universities on a metric-by-metric basis. For example, no C9 university achieves one of the top 10 scores for QS's indicator of research impact, adjusted for faculty size.

  • Peking University ranks 2nd, while Fudan University places 3rd;
  • Tsinghua's reputation among employers and academics is not as strong as Peking's, but Tsinghua is able to offer its students smaller class sizes and more faculty with a PhD. Tsinghua also produces more research papers per faculty member than Peking;
  • Shanghai Jiao Tong University (6th in Mainland China) produces more research papers than any other university from the Chinese mainland, leading QS's Papers per Faculty indicator; it is followed by the University of Science and Technology of China (4th in the mainland);

Ben Sowter, Research Director, QS, said: "China is one of our most competitive higher education nations. Its emergence as a global superpower in the sector is one of the major narratives to have emerged since we began compiling rankings, with its top universities having consistently increased their global reputation over the past 15 years. However, for the Chinese student, reputation isn't everything, and we see that China's top universities are also able to offer low class sizes, highly-qualified faculty members - those that possess a PhD - and also enjoy strong research profiles. Finally, they're also consistently very international, which emphasises that the modern world-class university must have a global outlook."
