"We were the first Western European airline to connect Europe with Beijing in 1988, and we see this as the natural next step in our history of building better connections between East and West," says CEO Mika Vehvilainen. "I want to thank the Chongqing authorities and the local airport for the excellent cooperation and support for opening this new route. We believe that Chongqing has the potential of developing into a hub for travel between Western China and Europe, both for business and leisure travellers."

Chinese companies and many Western companies, especially in the electronics, automotive and chemical industries, are currently expanding their operations in Chongqing, and business travel and cargo prospects between Chongqing and markets in Europe are promising. Chongqing Airport is also undergoing rapid expansion. When the expansion is complete in 2015, the airport will be capable of handling 45 million passengers per year.

For leisure travellers, the flight to Helsinki opens up fast connections to Europe's diverse cultures and attractions, from the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Colosseum in Rome to Croatia's stunning Dalmatian Coast and Finnish Lapland's peaceful wilderness and the Northern Lights. Helsinki itself, a prosperous city on the Baltic Sea noted for its architectural and design heritage, is a tourist destination in its own right, and is the 2012 World Design Capital.

Finnair is flying Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft on the route, which takes eight and a half hours. In addition to four flights per week from Chongqing, elsewhere in China Finnair flies daily from Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong to Helsinki. This summer Finnair will operate 81 flights per week to Helsinki from 11 destinations in Asia.
