Santa takes up residence in 50m² of tasty grandeur
SHANGHAI, Dec. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The HiltonShanghai Hongqiao has transformed its lobby into a Christmas wonderland featuring a huge gingerbread house and magnificent tree with all the trimmings.
Covering an area of 50m², the gingerbread house is the largest creation of its kind in Shanghai, and provides ample space for Santa Claus to greet the kids and hand out Yuletide goodies, as well as a grand entrance to the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant, Essence.
Guests entering the house are welcomed by a snowman and views of shallow creeks with Santa’s reindeers in attendance. The house is furnished with old-style furniture, with many of the features and all the artwork on the walls made entirely of gingerbread.
The external walls of the house are decorated with gingerbread art pieces created and signed by children attending the hotel’s Christmas Kids Cooking Class in November. Those attending this month’s class will also be able to add their creations to the walls.
The stunning gingerbread house is the creation of the HiltonShanghai Hongqiao’s multi-award-winning Pastry Chef, Cary Cheng and his team. Since 2009, Chef Cheng has represented China at a number of international competitions, taking the Silver Medal for Live Pastry at the Hong Kong International Culinary Classic 09, and the Gold Medal at the Shanghai International Cuisine Competition under the category of Buffet Exhibition.
The same year he organised a team to participate in the 11th International Culinary Arts Competition and won the Gold Medal for Buffet Chocolate Competition, as well as the Individual Bronze Medal. Representing China at the 2010 Third Pastry Asian Cup held in Singapore, he won the Best Chocolate Cake and Group Third Prize, going on to take 11th place in the 2011 Pastry World Cup held in Lyon, France.
Chef Cheng has again been chosen to represent China and the Hilton at the 2012 Asian Pastry Cup, having taken the Gold Medal for Best Plate Dessert as well as Best Chocolate Showpiece at the pre-selection competition.
