Outstanding real-world case study demonstrates how major enterprises can achieve sustainable procurement goals and build green supply chains

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 3, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- TUV Rheinland has been recognized by the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council (SPLC) for its contribution to the sustainability of large enterprises.

At a ceremony held in Minneapolis, the leading independent international provider of technical services for testing, inspection, certification, consultation and training received the SPLC Outstanding Case Study Award for its work with an international telecom provider, which adopted the TUV Rheinland Green Product Mark to drive its sustainable procurement goals and build a green supply chain.

"The adoption of the TUV Rheinland Green Product Mark helped the telecom provider to encourage it first-tier suppliers to develop green products. The impact has been dramatic, rippling through to second-tier suppliers -- such as the manufacturers of adapters and power cords -- and synchronizing the entire value chain with the company's green goals," said Fallight Xu, Manager of Sustainability Services at TUV Rheinland.

Although the telecom provider has successfully used the Green Product Mark to help it build a trusting relationship with more than 30,000 suppliers in over 80 countries, that isn't the end of the story. It is also encouraging consumers to shift to a more sustainable lifestyle by explicitly communicating the environmental advantages of its products at points of sale (e.g. Amazon) by prominently endorsing the Green Product Mark.

The SPLC Outstanding Case Study recognizes organizations that have documented and detailed sustainable purchasing efforts, enabling others to follow their lead. Holger Kunz, Executive Vice President Products at TUV Rheinland, notes that the Green Product Mark ecolabel has also been recommended by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a multi-attribute ecolabel for use in the massive US federal procurement market.

"TUV Rheinland has more than a century of experience, and inspecting the effects of products and services on health, safety and environmental sustainability is a core area of expertise. We truly believe companies can only be successful in the long term if they incorporate sustainability into the way they manage their business," said Mr Kunz.

"Every day, our experts help customers in industries all over the world to sharpen their competitive edge with safety and sustainability marks, such as our Green Product Mark, the Tox-Proof Mark, the Biodegradability Mark and the Recycled Material Verification Label. By making their products and processes more efficient and more sustainable, they are well placed to ensure that their offering remains viable in the long term," he said.
