HONG KONG, April 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- In alignment with the unified deployment under the direction of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China and the development roadmap of China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd. (the parent), China Mobile International Limited ("CMI") and China Mobile Guangdong Limited successfully completed the laying of the cross-border cable across the eastern artificial island of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge in late March, marking the first cross-border cable interconnection between Zhuhai and Hong Kong. China Mobile has become the first operator to own a cross-border optical cable on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the first operator with five cross-border transmission channels between Guangdong and Hong Kong.
China Mobile now has five Guangdong-Hong Kong transmission channels including the four that connect via Shenzhen (at Wenjindu, Luohu and Futian, as well as via the Western Corridor) in addition to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. The company has opened a 12T bandwidth connection between Shenzhen and Hong Kong and achieved the shortest transmission latency in the industry, with the POP-to-POP roundtrip latency along different routes kept within 1.0 to 1.2 milliseconds, providing high-speed, high-quality and low-latency transmission channels between Hong Kong and mainland China for mobile communications and the internet as well as for dedicated lines serving government offices and corporations.
In line with the Chinese government's national strategy that has been put in place for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, CMI has been committed to the installation of network connections within the area, in a move to boost the area's development based on an abundance of connectivity. With the successful cable interconnection via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, CMI has now owns extensive cross-border terrestrial cable resources including the Guangdong-Hong Kong, Shenzhen-Hong Kong, Zhuhai-Macao and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge transmission systems. In addition to the self-built South-East Asia Japan Cable System (SJC) and Asia-Pacific Gateway (APG) submarine cables that have gone into operation, the company has built on its existing resources to accelerate the expansion of submarine cables worldwide, with the Southeast Asia-Japan 2 (SJC2) submarine cable led by the company scheduled to be put into operation within two years. At the same time, CMI has leveraged the synergy of its global network centre in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong to further enhance the network resources throughout the area, providing high-quality and highly reliable connection services that help to promote the area's development.
In recent years, CMI has been providing high-quality network connection services for China Mobile and customers worldwide. With a global expansion strategy focused on the Information Highway (connectivity resources), the Information Station (POPs) and the Information Island (data centres), the company has gradually achieved economies of scale and has become a leading operator in the Asia-Pacific region and globally. CMI presently owns resources in more than 40 submarine and terrestrial cables worldwide, with total transmission bandwidth exceeding 23T, in addition to 138 POPs, across 91 cities in 60 countries. With Hong Kong as the starting point, the company has accelerated the construction of data centres in key areas worldwide, in a move to create a cloud-based data centre network.
