MACAO, June 5, 2019  /PRNewswire/ -- The Parisian Macao has earned a prestigious LEED Silver certification for the entirety of its operation, in the building design and construction (BD+C) category for new construction projects -- making it the first integrated resort in Macao to do so.

LEED is an industry-leading environmental sustainability rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Its stringent standards of quality and integrity address sustainability categories ranging from energy and water efficiency to waste management, purchasing, and indoor air quality.

Many of The Parisian Macao's comprehensive sustainability initiatives represent new features previously not seen in Macao or in an integrated resort of its scale in the region. As an example, The Parisian's interior and exterior lighting is 100 per cent LED. The result is a savings of more than 5 million kWh of electricity each year, which is enough power to brew around 42 million pots of coffee.

"Our objective from the very beginning was for The Parisian Macao to set a high sustainability standard for our industry right from the start of construction," said Mark McWhinnie, senior vice president of resort operations and development. "And to do this we had to design, build and ultimately operate in a way that is efficient and environmentally conscious, without sacrificing the luxury and service quality that Sands China's integrated resorts are known for. This LEED certification, coupled with the enormous success of The Parisian Macao, are proof that we have achieved that goal."

Like The Parisian, all Sands China properties apply the Sands ECO360 global sustainability strategy of parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp. (LVS). Sands ECO360 is designed to utilise measures like energy saving, resource recycling, conservation and community engagement in order to help minimise the company's environmental impact and lead the way in sustainable building development and resort operations.

In the area of water conservation, The Parisian's ultra-efficient low-flow water fixtures reduce water usage by more than 40 per cent compared to traditional fixtures. This measure saves about 12 million gallons of water a year, an amount that could fill nearly 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO of USGBC, said: "Achieving LEED certification is more than implementing sustainable practices. It represents a commitment to making the world a better place and influencing others to do better. Given the extraordinary importance of climate protection and the central role of the building industry in that effort, Sands China demonstrates its leadership through the LEED certification of The Parisian Macao."

The Parisian Macao also meets LVS's Sustainable Development Standard (SDS), an internal standard established in 2013 as part of Sands ECO360. SDS ensures that all new construction projects completed by LVS and Sands China Ltd. are environmentally friendly and adhere to the company's minimum energy and water efficiency standards.

Another eco-conscious design feature of The Parisian is the high-performance window glazing on the building's exterior. This reduces the amount of solar heat transferred through the windows, saving US$600,000 in energy annually. And the property's energy recovery wheels have an additional estimated saving potential of about US$175,000 a year.

In addition, all of The Parisian's guest shuttle buses run on low-emission compressed natural gas (CNG) technology, and all guest parking is located underground, which significantly reduces the heat island effect typical of urban buildings.

Taken together, these and a significant number of other Sands ECO360 sustainability measures help The Parisian Macao operate at about 25 per cent better than industry baseline standards for overall energy performance. That creates a savings of US$3.9 million a year, or approximately 26 million kWh -- enough to power more than 62,000 average Macao households for an entire month.

The success of Sands China's ECO360 implementation continues to earn the company awards and certifications. The Macao SAR government awarded The Parisian Macao with a Macau Green Hotel Gold Award in 2018, and Sands China was recently added to the FTSE4Good Index, which measures the performance of companies demonstrating strong environmental, social and governance practices. Sands China is also in the Hong Kong Business Sustainability Index, which recognises leading companies that have demonstrated increasing concern for corporate social responsibility and business sustainability.
