HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam, Nov. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- According to a new report released in July 2019 by the United Nations, the world will reach 9.7 billion people and up to 70% of whom are expected to live in cities. The population concentration and the urban growth rate have created enormous pressure and forced cities around the world to become smarter and more creative. Vietnam is also not out of that trend. Building and developing smart cities is one of Vietnam's key development goals under the Politburo's Resolution No.52 on Revolution 4.0. However, Vietnam hasn't had any urban areas that fully meet 6 criteria of a smart city, including:

  • Smart economy
  • Smart transportation (traffic - infrastructure)
  • Smart residents (human resources, capacity)
  • Smart environment (natural resources)
  • Smart city management
  • Smart quality of life

Vietnam is lacking the connection among different resources to build a comprehensive and synchronized solution to building a smart city model in all aspects from Electronic Government Building Policy, Smart Traffic Construction Policy, effective application of information technology - communication to health care, education - training, environmental pollution control, etc. On the top of that to popularize intelligent data so that Vietnamese people can easily access and use them, which helps every citizen become a smart city's member.

In order to solve these problems, the Green Economic Institute has been assigned to implement the project of Connecting resources for development of  a pilot smart city in Ho Chi Minh City. Ms. Duong Thi Bich Diep, Deputy Head of the Institute, said, "Not only studying experience of building smart cities from advanced countries and the current situation of Vietnam for better solutions, but we also find out and connect domestic and foreign organizations and businesses to successfully build urban areas in Vietnam, especially the creative urban area in the East of Ho Chi Minh City ".

Since taking on this task, the Green Economic Institute has conducted various surveys and studied the world's leading smart urban models of Singapore, Copenhagen (Denmark), Stockholm (Sweden), Seoul (South Korea) ... The practical research trips and meetings with leading experts have helped the Institute gain practical and useful information for planning and turning the creative and highly-interactive urban area in the East of Ho Chi Minh City into a new technology "mecca" with information technology as the core. This will be the place for integrating three fields: agriculture, information technology and tourism with three "valleys": Smart Farm Valley, Valley of Intelligence, Valley of Smart Housing.

On September 5, 2019, the Green Economic Institute successfully organized a talk show to exchange experience on smart city development among Korean experts and 86 leaders of Ho Chi Minh City, representatives of departments, agencies and People's Committees of Districts 2, District 9 and Thu Duc. The talkshow was attended by Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City's Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan, Deputy Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Vo Van Hoan, Professor Yang Yoon Jae - Lecturer of Seoul National University and former Vice Mayor of Seoul City; Mr. Park Hyun Il - CEO of Bando Engineering & Construction, who is responsible for developing many projects on environmentally friendly housing, ecological energy, sustainable energy, etc.

The Green Economic Institute's initiatives have received special recognition from the leaders of Ho Chi Minh City. At the talkshow of "Talking about smart cities, towards the planning and development of a creative and highly-interactive urban area in the East of Ho Chi Minh City", Deputy Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Vo Van Hoan commented that the contents of this meeting provided an overview of smart cities. These are very important points for us to apply in the near future. "

To make the building solutions of smart cities to soon come into practice and be ready to deploy, the Green Economic Institute has worked and connected many different resources, both at home and abroad to participate in the project development.  Specifically, the South Korean KT Corporation will be a strategic partner accompanying the Institute in providing technology solutions, connecting artificial intelligence (AI) and internet (IoT), Lavi E&C Construction Company and financial institutions, experts, etc.

According to Ms. Duong Thi Bich Diep, after successful application of the pilot model in Ho Chi Minh City, the Green Economic Institute will become the unit that connects and develops other smart cities nationwide. The advanced urban areas are expected to apply leading techniques and technologies but still imbue with the national identity and make full use of local different strengths.
