Malaysia Unveils Smart Community Plans and Expands Internet of Things Business Opportunities

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Aug. 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Asia IoT Business Platform is co-hosting its 10thedition at Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur with the Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems (MIMOS), Malaysia'snational ICT R&D centre - under purview of the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

Held in conjunction with the MyIoT Week, from 18th to 19th August 2016, the conference and exhibition will bring together government officials, public sectors, and business leaders in Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) sectors to discuss trends and opportunities of IoT, and its impact to businesses in Malaysia.

In an interview at the previous edition, Helmi Halim, MIMOS's Senior Director & Head of Corporate Market Strategies, shared that IoT Malaysia is currently at its infancy stage, and the government will focus on value creation to implementation of IoT in strategic sectors.

"IoT has definitely created new opportunities especially when it comes to industry applications and services; and we see immense growth opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). We are working to enhance the competitiveness of manufacturing sector, and improve the Smart Community -- which links to enhancement of transportation for mobility in urban area sectors," explained Helmi.

As an advisor to the conference agenda of Asia IoT Business Platform, Helmi emphasized the importance of real life examples and success stories of IoT, and invited solutions providers to collaborate and educate local public sectors and enterprises on their experiences in IoT.

Besides MIMOS, the esteemed Advisory Board consists of leaders from Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science & Technology (CREST), Microsoft Malaysia, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Telekom Malaysia, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Kontron Malaysia.

Over 400 local enterprises senior management that are exploring solutions for business growth and efficiency will attend the event to learn from case studies presented by end users and solution providers.

Industry Platform, organizer of Asia IoT Business Platform, recently conducted a survey among participants that have registered for the event. The results showed that 48.88% of local enterprises have started exploring and implementing IoT solutions, but only 4.17% have reported seeing the benefits of IoT implementation.

Asia IoT Business Platform, along with local government agencies, aims to educate enterprises that are currently facing difficulties in transformation of business models and IoT adoption.

The focus of Asia IoT Business Platform this year revolves around growing the IoT ecosystem in Malaysia. The 2-day conference will feature sessions including Smart Community, Smart Manufacturing, Healthcare, Intelligent Plantation and Transportation & Logistics.

Malaysia is aiming to be the Premier Regional IoT Development Hub: in July 2015, it launched its National IoT Strategic Roadmap. IoT implementation is expected to contribute RM9.5 billion (US$ 2.5 billion) to the country's Gross National Income (GNI) by the year 2020 and RM42.5 billion (US$ 11.166 billion) by 2025.

Dato Ng Wan Peng will be a keynote speaker of the 10th edition of Asia IoT Business Platform, along with Dato' Sri Dr. Noorul Ainur Mohd. Nur, Secretary General of MOSTI and YB Datuk Seri Panglima Madius Tangau, Minister of MOSTI.
