PUNTA DEL ESTE, Uruguay, Sept. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The organizer of the 2017-18 Clipper Race announced that Sanya Serenity Coast had claimed the honors in Leg 1, from Liverpool, England to Punta del Este, Uruguay, during a press conference held in the Uruguayan beach resort on September 23rd at 7 pm, local time. Sanya, China's leading tropical seaside tourist destination, has, in recent days, become the talk of the town among members of the media, as well as among local residents and visitors, not only in Uruguay but also across all of South America.

Sanya Serenity Coast was led by Australian professional sailor Wendy Tuck backed by a crew of 70 from over 10 countries, including Belgium, England, Russia, the United States and Wales. All the crew members took turns in getting the necessary training during the one year period of the race. During the voyage, the crew faced one difficulty after another, including seasickness, dampness, cold, 24 hours of uninterrupted duty as well as limited fresh water and food.

The outstanding results that can only be attributed to the crew's excellent teamwork won Sanya the best berth in the dock and attracted the attention of passers-by, many of whom were visiting tourists. Combined with the publicity generated by Sanya Serenity Coast's roadshow during which the organizing committee's delegation did a successful job in showcasing Sanya's tourism resources, the city has rapidly captured tens of thousands of new fans.

Sanya has been named one of 52 Places to Go this year by The New York Times. This is the first appearance of the Chinese seaside resort in the Clipper Race. All 12 teams that are participating in the race will reach the Sanya stopover in February 2018 and be able to see for themselves what the beautiful and charming city has to offer.
