Osram Celebrates Roofing Ceremony for LED Chip Plant in Kulim

KULIM, Malaysia, Dec. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Osram Opto Semiconductors held the roofing ceremony for its new LED chip production plant at the Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Malaysia, on November 24, 2016. Aldo Kamper, President and CEO of Osram Opto Semiconductors, Dr. Roland Mueller, Managing Director, and Deputy MITI Minister YB Datuk Chua Tee Yong attended the company internal ceremony. Sitting on 48 acres of land, the Kulim plant will represent the largest and most modern LED chip production site in the world. The development and production of the new plant in Kulim covers semiconductor LED chips based on 6-inch-wafers.

Aldo Kamper, President and CEO of Osram Opto Semiconductors, expressed: "We are seeing a high growth of global LED lighting market, driven by increasing adoption of LED lighting systems. With the piling and substructure phases complete, the new plant is scheduled to be ready for equipment early summer 2017 and start of production at the end of 2017. Upon completion, the new plant is set to create over 1,500 high skilled jobs in Malaysia.

Dr. Roland Mueller, Managing Director of Osram Opto Semiconductors (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. stated, "Our LEDs have been assembled in Osram's pioneer plant in Penang since the early 1970's. Since then a modern LED chip production has been added to the plant.
