British Council East Asia IELTS Prize valued at KRW 100 million opens for applications

2018-12-12 11:00

SEOUL, South Korea, Dec. 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ --  The British Council East Asia IELTS Prize 2018/19 is now inviting applications from students who plan to begin undergraduate or postgraduate studies locally or overseas in the 2019/20 academic year. Three Local Prizes amounting to KRW 21 million will be awarded to students from Korea, with Regional Prizes for regional winners in the East Asia region[1] totalling KRW 82 million. Since its launch in 2011, over 200 outstanding students have been awarded the IELTS Prize to pursue tertiary education in their desired destinations, such as the UK, US, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Poland, Singapore and more. IELTS Prize winners studied a range of programmes, from Medicine, International Relations and Engineering Science to Human Rights, Public Communication, Performance, and many more.

"The British Council East Asia IELTS Prize is conferred on young scholars from diversified backgrounds who strive to achieve their study dreams. As an organisation that offers life-changing opportunities through delivering millions of exams annually, we are delighted to support these outstanding individuals to realise their dreams of pursuing higher education abroad, expand their understanding of the world, and then return home with new knowledge, improved confidence and fresh insights," said Trish Thomson, Regional Marketing Director, East Asia. "With more than 10,000 universities, schools, employers and immigration bodies recognising IELTS, it continues to play a critical global role as the world's most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration. In the past year, more than three million IELTS tests have been taken globally, making it the world's most popular language test of its kind. The popularity and global recognition of IELTS positions it as the ideal choice of English proficiency test for those wishing to pursue their aspirations through international educational opportunities."

The Regional Grand Prize Winner 2017/18, Dinda Royhan, currently pursuing a Master of Human Rights and Humanitarian Action at Sciences Po, notes "I went to public schools in Indonesia where Bahasa Indonesia is the official medium of instructions, taking IELTS was the best way for me to demonstrate my ability to study abroad in English. To be very frank, I did not expect to obtain a high IELTS score simply because Bahasa Indonesia is the only language that I've ever used academically. Scoring 8.5 in IELTS was very empowering and made my application to Sciences Po more attractive, as the university receives thousands of applications from all over the world each year. I strongly encourage students planning to study abroad take IELTS with the British Council as it unlocks unlimited opportunities you never imagined possible."

Application for the British Council East Asia IELTS Prize 2018/19 is now open to students who are permanent residents of the East Asia region[2] and intend to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies locally or abroad in 2019 in a tertiary institution that accepts IELTS as part of its admission requirements. Applicants must hold a minimum band score of 6 in each of the four test sections of an IELTS test taken with the British Council in the East Asia region[3] from 1 April 2018 onwards. The deadline for applications is 30 April 2019. For details and the application, please visit
