Herbalife Nutrition Scientist Dr. Zhengfei Lu to Present Illustration of Industry-Leading DNA Technologies for Quality Control of Botanicals

2018-12-04 11:20 1735

HONG KONG, Dec. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Herbalife Nutrition (NYSE:HLF), a premier global nutrition company whose purpose is to make the world healthier and happier, has been confirmed as a mainstage presenter for "The 2nd International Conference on DNA Technology for Authentication, Quality Control and Conservation of Herbal Material", held from December 2 to 5 by the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

As a global supplier of herbal supplements with a strong commitment to product quality, Herbalife Nutrition is leading the way in testing and technology for the nutrition industry, using advanced DNA technologies for better quality control of botanical ingredients. Dr. Zhengfei Lu, analytical scientist at Herbalife Nutrition, will present an illustration of how different DNA technologies can be applied to trace and qualify botanical ingredients from start to finish, to showcase that DNA technologies may be the most viable tool for quality control in the supply chain of nutritional ingredients.

With current good manufacturing practices requiring dietary supplement manufacturers to conduct at least one test to verify the identity of the components used in their products, manufacturers are facing challenges in doing so due to profile complexity. However, through extensive research and testing, Herbalife Nutrition has uncovered that DNA technologies can be used to precisely define the target botanical in supply chain management, trace material identity throughout the manufacturing processes and detect potential adulterants in finished products.

"Using DNA based biotechnology for authenticating ingredient integrity is integral to our product quality control to ensure that what is on the product label is in the product," said Gary Swanson, senior vice president of global quality, Herbalife Nutrition. "As one of the only companies that has adopted advanced DNA technologies for testing botanical ingredients in our own laboratory, we are proud to share our work with the science community at this international conference."

Since 2015, Herbalife Nutrition's team of more than 300 scientists and Ph.D.s have been developing and using DNA testing methods for botanicals as one of the analytical tools for the Company's quality control process, helping ensure that consumers get the highest quality products possible.
