SINGAPORE, April 28, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- HOYA Vision Care, a leader in optical technology innovation, has launched MiYOSMART Sun spectacle lenses in Singapore, which are designed to be effective and non-invasive protection against myopia for children. The photochromic lenses provide added protection against intensive sunlight and can darken outdoors and fade back to transparent indoors.

Origins of MiYOSMART lenses

Developed by HOYA Vision Care in cooperation with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, MiYOSMART is a line of innovative ophthalmic lenses for myopia management. The foundation of myopia progression management technology comes from Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (D.I.M.S.) Technology.

Based on the results of the two-year clinical trial conducted by the Centre for Myopia Research at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, it is proven that MiYOSMART slowed down myopia progression by an average of 60%[1] compared to conventional single vision lenses.

Just last year, the six-year follow-up clinical study proved the MiYOSMART spectacle lens myopia control effect is sustained over time^ for children wearing the lens. It is also the longest study conducted on a myopia management spectacle lens ever.

The next level of protection

By adopting the award-winning D.I.M.S. Technology and adding protection from intensive sunlight, the MiYOSMART Sun lenses help to deliver unparalleled eye comfort and myopia management in one comprehensive product[1],[5]-[7]. All MiYOSMART Sun spectacle lenses offer 100% protection from UV-A and UV-B,[8] reducing the risk of long-term damage to the eye.

Studies show that spending time outdoors may slow down myopia progression in children[9],[10]; it is worthwhile to encourage kids to head out, but only by ensuring they are protected from the potential harm from intense sunlight[11]-[13]. Most lifetime sun exposure occurs under 21[11], so providing children have adequate and reliable sun protection is paramount.

Such photochromic spectacle lenses can help in several ways, including decreased symptoms of photophobia[3], reduced glare[2]-[4], improved vision in intense sunlight, and photostress recovery time[2]~. Furthermore, MiYOSMART Sun utilizes molded laminate photochromic film technology to preserve the optical performance of D.I.M.S. Technology, so children are able to enjoy the swift darkening and the subsequent fading to clear in seconds~.

With MiYOSMART Sun lenses, children no longer have to switch spectacles every time they step outdoors, reducing the inconvenience and allowing them to focus on enjoying the environment and activities around them.

Tests were conducted at room temperature (23°C). Inactive MiYOSMART photochromic spectacle lenses block 100% of harmful UV light, as per the ISO8980-3 (2022) standard. Reliable UV measurements are not possible during photochromic lens activation. Activation does not alter UV-blocking characteristics compared to clear spectacle lenses.
