SEOUL, South Korea, Feb. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Located in the middle of the face, the nose plays a crucial role in determining a person's image and appearance. Because it can be altered to change a patient's image dramatically, rhinoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgeries.

Yet an increasing number of patients are either unsatisfied with the procedure's results or suffer from mental and physical trauma due to side effects, so they consider getting a revision.

So when is the right time for a revision?

Kim Ji-myung, director of TL Plastic Surgery in Korea, says, "If the patient simply doesn't like the nose length or line, then a revision is recommended six months after the initial surgery. Approximately six months are required for the swelling to go down and scar tissue damaged by the surgery to heal and to allow the correct diagnosis of the nose condition ."

"On the other hand, if side effects occur due to an implant, resolving the issue as soon as possible is recommended due to inflammation and the risk of deformation," he continued.

Kim added, "Depending on the side effects, the method of revision is different. If the implant appears to be visible through the skin, it should be replaced with a smaller implant than the existing implant. If the nasal bridge is crooked, the implant inserted in the first operation should be removed and a new implant should be reinserted. In addition, if the implant is not fixed but is moving, a corrective operation to attach the implant to the bone membrane surrounding the nose should be performed. Deformity on the tip of the nose could be caused by inflammation of the nasal tip because of the forced implant. In this case, the implant must be removed and replaced with autologous tissue."

Kim said, "Recently, many clinics are resorting to discounts to attract patients and more people are deciding to get nose jobs recklessly. Thus, the number of unsatisfied patients or those with side effects who are considering a revision is rising. It's important to proceed with a revision as soon as it's decided. Furthermore, a patient should visit his or her physician if any suspicious symptoms occur."
