SHANGHAI, June 2 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Global gas demand is predicted to increase by 1-2% in 2010 after falling by 3-4% last year. This rise is fuelled by increased demand from Asia. Asian LNG demand accounts for two-thirds of the world's demand, with annual demand growth taking up half of the world's total. More impressively, demand increase in China is 45% of that in Asia. China's economy retained high growth on the national stimulus plan, in favor of utilization of overseas natural gas resources. Mr. Zhang Guobao, director of NDRC, mentioned that the oversupply of natural gas in the global market will fuel China's negotiation on overseas LNG purchasing.
Winter weather triggered natural gas shortages in China of 2009, which revealed the issue of monopolistic natural gas market. As an important natural gas importing country, China has established LNG terminal projects in Shenzhen, Putian and Shanghai, with new projects underway in Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Shandong in 2010. Meanwhile, a set of construction programs of the "Second pipeline of west-to-east gas transmission," "natural gas pipeline in central Asia" and "Sino-Burma natural gas pipeline" will witness a new picture of the industry, with pipelines of 150k km in 2020.
