RICS: The Final Proposal of West Kowloon Cultural Hub Should Embrace Sustainability

HONG KONG, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Three master plans for the cultural and arts hub located at 40-hectare West Kowloon harbourfront district were unveiled last Friday, 20th August. The three concepts come from three world-renowned architects -- British architect Norman Foster, Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and Hong Kong local architect Rocco Yim Sen-kee will be displayed and exhibited for the public for a three-month consultation period.  The Hong Kong SAR Government invited the public to submit views based on these three plans.

The three concepts all aim to embrace some sustainable built features such as open space and greenery elements integrating with the cultural, community and residential aspects on the background of Hong Kong harbourfront.

After reviewing the three proposals by the architects, RICS Hong Kong strongly supports to incorporate the sustainable elements into the plan. Mr. David Faulkner, Chairman of RICS Hong Kong, said, "For the project to be a success it is important that all the cultural and commercial elements of the scheme are fully integrated so as to compliment each other throughout the life of the project. We note the desire to pick the best elements from each scheme, but the project must be built according to a well thought through overall plan if it is to succeed."

"This project provides an unprecedented opportunity for Hong Kong to put itself on the world's cultural map by providing a wide range of venues catering to both local and international performers. RICS members possess a broad range of skills related to the development and management of large scale projects around the world, and members look forward to assisting as the project proceeds."

To help the public and stakeholders to have more information about harbourfront development with international insights, RICS Hong Kong has organised its 2010 Annual Conference entitled "Public Private Partnership (PPP) in Waterfront Development" to be held on September 11, 2010 at Conrad Hong Kong Hotel.

This conference will be officiated by Mrs Carrie Lam, Secretary for Development, the HKSAR Government, joined by international harbourfront experts from the US, UK and Spain as keynote speakers. These overseas experts will provide international examples and lessons for Hong Kong to learn and adopt.  Followed by the talks of the overseas speakers, a closing panel discussion, led by Mr Nicholas Brooke, Chairman of Harbourfront Committee, HKSAR and Past President of RICS, will be organised to enhance an interactive and productive information exchange and discussion to address the application of PPP to the harbourfront development and management.

Registration is still open for RICS Hong Kong Annual Conference 2010.
