HONG KONG, Nov. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- At the second day of MIPIM Asia 2011, participants and exhibitors continue to interact and exchange ideas on future business opportunities. Among the various conferences today, please find below highlights:

Liveable cities: Eco-friendly infrastructure and housing for building a sustainable future

Mr Jason Hu, Mayor, Taichung City Government: Taichung is a special city that focuses a lot on environmental conservations. Thus pollution rate actually declines as the city grows. Statistics shows that from 2002 to 2010, pollution reduced by 205% and green zone expanded by 175%. This proves that pollution is not necessarily a by-product of urbanization. We will develop a few major projects in the future. Among them will be the "Jade Eco-Park", which will be completed in 2016. By then, 80% of the water inside the projects can be recycled and reused by the tenants.

Globalisation of retail brands in and out of China: successes and challenges

Ms Meagan Dietz, Director of International Business Development, Godiva Chocolatier said: "The company is expanding rapidly in Hong Kong and we are confident we can replicate such results in mainland China. Currently, we already own 20 stores and two cafes in the major cities of China. "

Mr Richard David, CEO of Treasury China Trust (Singapore) said: "Mainland China is definite a market with great potential. Yet there is a need to educate investors that there is no perfect market in the world. There is always a need to strive a balance between what the city needs and its future growth potential so as to formulate the best solution for retailers to tap into different markets.

What makes a city smart?

Mr Harry Verhaar, Sr. Director of Energy & Climate Change, Philips said: "Hong Kong has all the elements needed to transform itself into a smart city. If we can make full use of all the low carbon technologies, overall electricity usage can be reduced by as much as 50%. Yet a smart city needs to be built with all smart transportation facilities and buildings to attain the best synergy effect."

Dr Reinhold ACHATZ, Corporate Vice President of Siemens AG and head of Corporate Research and Technologies, and head of the Corporate Development Center, SIEMENS said: "Smart city is far more than just using less electricity but also involves more effective transfer of information technology so the city can grow in much faster pace. Sustainable development and affordability should also be taken into consideration if we are aiming for long term development of the smart city."

What's More: Tonight Mrs. Carrie Lam, Secretary for Development of the HKSAR Government, together with our renowned jury panel, is going to unveil results of the MIPIM Asia 2011 Awards. Stay tuned for tonight's announcement which will be out in form of another press release.
