Great Works Displayed in Hong Kong Pavilion

HONG KONG, Dec. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- The 4th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Asia (SIGGRAPH Asia 2011) was successfully held 12 to 15 December, 2011 in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Its first time in Hong Kong, the event is a premier in the region’s computer graphics and interactive technology (CGIT) industry.

The occasion attracted an enthusiastic crowd of over 7,500 CG practitioners to attend the technology conference and exhibition. It helps facilitate technology exchange and the development of creative industry, and assists the local trade to explore international market. To show her support, Miss Elizabeth TSE, Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology) of the Hong Kong SAR Government attended the Opening Ceremony on the morning of 13 December, and after which she visited the Hong Kong Pavilion, which was funded by Create Hong Kong (CreateHK).

CreateHK is tasked by HKSAR Government to promote Hong Kong’s creative industry. It encourages the local trade to organize more events to reinforce the city’s position as Asia's hub of innovation. "Digital entertainment is an important part of Hong Kong’s creative industry. We are pleased that SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 is held in Hong Kong to provide the industry with an important exchange and trading platform," says Jerry Liu, Head of CreateHK.

With the support of CreateHK, Hong Kong ACM SIGGRAPH Professional Chapter (HKACM) set up a Hong Kong Pavilion involving 32 institutions during SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 to showcase Hong Kong’s strength in CGIT. According to Dr Eric Liu, Chairman of HKACM, "The Hong Kong Pavilion brings the industry’s leading practitioners together and showcases a number of world-class works, including demonstration videos of 3D projection technology, stereoscopic projection technology, 3D movies, new special effects technology, animations, motion capturing technology and more. Visitors from around the world will have a whole new perception and understanding of Hong Kong’s quality outputs."

The combination of academic discussion and application helps local industry explore international market

With the rapid development of the CG industry, CGIT is being widely adopted by the world's leading interactive entertainment media. The exhibition showcased 10 education institutions' latest research output from their creative projects, which are the beacons of the industry. The event also invited internationally renowned luminaries to give thematic speeches on visual effects and animation design of 3D movies like the Hollywood animation "Kung Fu Panda". The event facilitated the industry to explore CG creativity and interactive technology application, widened the local industry's international perspective and enhanced their understanding to application of technologies, which in turn benefits the industry in exploring room for development.

Hong Kong enjoys certain edges in developing the creative industry. She boasts a pool of talent with international vision and good mastery of English and Chinese, freedom of information and creation, a multicultural society, top-of-the-line production, deep understanding of international business environment, and good IT and communication facilities and support services.

"SIGGRAPH is the world's largest and most representative CG event and is both academic and application-oriented. Through hosting the major event, Hong Kong will see her computer graphic design and interactive technology further advance towards world-class standard. The Conference and Exhibition is a huge success in that many world-class works were exhibited in the Hong Kong Pavilion, impressing global visitors of our technologies," says Dr Eric Liu.

CreateHK funds 3,300 passes for practitioners and students to nurture stars of innovation for Hong Kong

CreateHK attaches great importance to nurturing a new generation of creative stars. In this occasion, it sponsored 3,300 passes to local practitioners as well as tertiary and high school students to attend the seminars and exhibition during SIGGRAPH Asia 2011. This gave them a better understanding of the status of the creative industry, enabled them to learn from other countries and regions’ experience, and exposed them to local novelties, which cultivate more creative minds for the sustainable development of Hong Kong’s innovation economy.
