SINGAPORE, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire-Asia/ --

  • Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE) marks 10th year in Singapore
  • Top four finalists join delegates from 17 countries in a study trip to Germany

On its 10th year in Singapore, the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE), a global partnership between research-based enterprise Bayer and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), yesterday conferred the BYEE title to nine outstanding students and named the four winners who will be joining youth delegates from 17 other countries in an environmental study trip to Germany on November 7-12, 2010.

Gracing the awards presentation ceremony was Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs.  In his speech, Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee commended Bayer for taking on the program for the youth: "Through youth environmental education programs like the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy, the company is unceasingly able to raise youth's awareness of issues concerning the environment.  Such programs provide young people with the opportunity to acquire fresh perspectives and encourage their involvement and contribution to the society."

The 2010 Singapore BYEEs are: Chua Ang Hong (Nanyang Technological University), Lim Hong Wen (Nanyang Polytechnic), Liu Zhihao (Hwa Chong Institution), Su Yiru, Keshia (Singapore Polytechnic), Suriani Binte Kamsan (Ngee Ann Polytechnic), Tan Mei Xuan (National University of Singapore), Yusuf Bin Rafi'ee (Institute of Technical Education), Peh Xin Ni and Yong Yun Hua (Republic Polytechnic).

Based on the merit of their projects both in concept and implementation, Chua Ang Hong, Liu Zhihao, Lim Hong Wen, and Tan Mei Xuan were awarded the study tour in Germany.

Ang Hong developed an Anti-Litter Campaign that creates awareness for "killer litter" such as cigarette butts and non-biodegradable litter that pollute the environment.

Zhihao is developing a method of converting rainwater to potable water, and demonstrated the viability of this initiative by testing in fishponds and school aquariums of his school.

Meanwhile, Hong Wen led his team members in conducting workshops to build community gardens using a special composting technique.  Mei Xuan, on the other hand, created an environmental awareness campaign by way of an educational poster and created a 4-minute online video to address issues of climate change.

"We are very pleased with the level of energy, commitment and passion for the environment of our Singapore BYEEs. Their ideas offer practical approaches that can be readily adopted to foster sustainable communities and address climate change," said Marcus Yim, Managing Director of Bayer in Southeast Asia.

Supported in Singapore by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the National Youth Achievement Awards (NYAA), BYEE is one of the longest running youth environmental programs in the country.

On their weeklong study tour in Germany, the envoys experience heightened environmental awareness as practiced by the people, the government, the industry, and within Bayer's facilities, which adhere to the highest standards of environment protection.
