Government programs still the main driver for RFID applications
Driven by government-sponsored programs, China’s RFID market maintained rapid growth in 2007. RFID continued its leading position in citizen ID applications. In particular, RFID applications continued to find its largest market in the massive issuance of the second generation citizen ID cards. Compared to 2006, the scale of RFID applications in the field of communications saw a slight downturn with the maturing all-in-one municipal transportation market. However, it is still one of the major scale application markets. A major highlight for RFID applications in 2007 is its applications in electronic tickets for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Olympic food supply chain. RFID applications during the Olympiad are expected to become one of the major drivers for scale applications in China’s RFID market.

Breakthrough in development of UHF RFID standards
The Ministry of Information Industry released the Circular on Interim Regulations for Applications of RFID Technology at 800/900MHz at the end of April 2007, which specified the trial operation frequency bands for UHF RFID technology in China as 840-845MHz and 920-925 MHz. This provides a strong support for development of the RFID industry in China, especially large scale RFID applications. Besides, other standards for RFID applications are also under drafting. Determination of UHF standards has brought opportunities and support for development of China’s RFID industry and market. However, there is still way to go for extensive application of RFID in fields including logistics and retail because of coordinations in technology, cost and the industry.
New applications market of NFC emerging
Nowadays, mobile phone has become an important multifunction carrier for information exchange. NFC technology, a new technology that combines RFID and mobile phones, has caught attention of telecommunication equipment vendors, terminal vendors and telecommunication carriers throughout the world. With narrowing of profitability room for mobile phone sets, mobile phone vendors represented by Nokia and Motorola are already eyeing China, the largest mobile communications market in the world, for development of NFC. Non-contact connection of NFC has brought brand new experience to subscribers and this is highly attractive to mobile communication carriers in China. They have already teamed up with telecommunication equipment vendors and launched pilot programs in a few cities in China. NFC applications are still in starting stage in China and are not expected to see explosive growth in the near term. However, NFC applications in China will emerge in the market sooner or later with promotion of its applications in major cities in China.
