Move enhances its network capability in Hong Kong and will deliver greater performance and cost savings to customers

SINGAPORE, May 4 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Cable&Wireless Worldwide has announced a strategic extension of its world-class network in Asia Pacific with the commissioning of its own backhaul network in Hong Kong. The network is already carrying live traffic for multinational customers.

The company also announced that it has been awarded a Unified Carrier Licence by the Hong Kong Telecoms Authority, which allows it to provide and operate a public internal telecoms network and sell an expanded scope of telecoms services to customers.

As a part of its Hong Kong investment, Cable&Wireless Worldwide will be increasing its network capability by connecting the South Lantau and Tong Fuk Cable Station with the data centres in Hong Kong. The two cable stations in South Lantau are among the most critical network landing stations in Asia. Cable&Wireless Worldwide's investment will enhance its existing and planned investments in submarine capacity on AAG, FLAG, APCN, APCN2 and RNAL/FNAL.

With this significant regional network expansion, Cable&Wireless Worldwide can now offer businesses with operations in Hong Kong direct high-speed connectivity between all their major international locations via its global core transmission network. This lowers the cost, decreases latency and enhances the quality of network services provided, and delivers seamless access to two of the busiest data centres based in Hong Kong.

Jim Marsh, Chief Executive Officer, Cable&Wireless Worldwide said, "Asia is important to us. Our business has excelled in the last two years in Asia Pacific as a result of us closely aligning our investments to our customers' business. Our aim is to become the first choice communications integrator for large users of mission critical communications and carrier customers globally -- especially in Asia Pacific. We are well positioned to achieve this objective."

Commenting on the Hong Kong investment; Nick Lambert, Managing Director, Global Markets, Cable&Wireless Worldwide said, "Hong Kong is a crucial telecommunications hub in Asia Pacific -- both as a regional business nerve centre as well as a gateway to mainland China. As our customers grow their investments into Hong Kong and China, they are demanding next-generation network services at lower costs. Our investment in Hong Kong is designed to deliver these outcomes to our customers."

This investment in Hong Kong is a strategic addition to Cable&Wireless Worldwide's sustained investments into upgrading network and enhancing capabilities across Asia. The company has invested in next-generation Multi-Service Platform capability in Asia to deliver innovative Ethernet-based solutions and value-added communications solutions to customers.
