Cyberport Facilitates Diversity of IT Internship

HONG KONG, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Cyberport's IT Internship and Exchange Programmes for 2010 are now open for applications. The ultimate objective is to attract more potential partners to create more job opportunities for young graduates. Also, it aims to broaden the international exposure of tertiary IT students so as to equip them to become IT professionals.

This year, students who want to apply for the IT Exchange Programme are encouraged to look for internship opportunities in the newly added Working Holiday Visa countries -- Canada, Japan and Germany. The "IT Internship Co-ordination & Facilitation Programme 2010/11" will sponsor 30 interns for a maximum of HK$4,000 monthly for each placement.

To pay tribute to the companies and universities supporting the programme, and to announce the launch of the new "IT Internship Co-ordination & Facilitation Programme" and the "IT Exchange Programme" Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited (Cyberport) has organized an event named, "How to Engage in Internship," today (4 Feb) under the full support of the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) at the HKTDC Education & Careers Expo 2010.

Students from the City University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University of Hong Kong who have previously interned with the programme shared with attendees their valuable exchange experience. Two intern students from the School of Creative Media of the City University of Hong Kong have worked for one month at InterGrid, the famous computer visual effects company in Wellington City, New Zealand (production of the Oscar Award-winning "The Lord of the Rings") initiating new IT projects, including writing the forum and blog for "Green Button" and building the website for the Raygun Video Competition co-organized by InterGrid, HP and Weta Digital.

A representative from Fujitsu Microelectronics Pacific Asia Ltd., a company that has hired programme interns, said that hiring interns is a win-win; the interns can build their professional foundation while employers can solve manpower issues by employing interns as permanent staff, as well as obtaining business inspirations from new blood.

To meet its public mission of IT and digital media workforce development, Cyberport has provided 106 subsidized intern placements, offered by 56 IT, digital media and digital content companies or organizations. For the Exchange Programmes, in 2009, 66 students from 6 local universities were subsidized to exchange with 41 overseas institutes and companies in seven countries around the globe.

The "IT Internship Co-ordination & Facilitation Programme 2010/11," which provides on-job skill training opportunities for local fresh graduates and tertiary students (co-op students) for 6 to 12 months, will sponsor 30 intern places for a maximum monthly rate of HK$4,000 for each placement. The "IT Internship Co-ordination & Facilitation Programme" provides on-the-job skill training opportunities for new local graduates and tertiary students (co-op students) as well as aims at reinforcing the attitude of pursuing IT as a study discipline and a lifelong career.

For the "IT Exchange Programme in Academic Year 2009/10" the amount of sponsorship of each exchange programme will be a maximum of HK$70,400 with a total of 15 sponsored programmes. Also, apart from local tertiary institutes offering degree-award programmes, those offering high diploma or above programmes accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) can also apply. The "IT Exchange Programme" is a short term overseas student exchange sponsorship scheme designed for tertiary students (co-op students) of local universities that aims to enhance their IT competence through overseas visits and projects so as to garner international exposure and improve foreign language proficiency.
