Judged outstanding by CMO Asia for carbon and climate accounting, and regulation of corporate social and environment behaviour

SINGAPORE, Aug. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- DHL, the world's leading logistics company, has scooped a trio of top trophies at Asia's Best CSR Practices Awards 2012, organised by CMO Asia. DHL was judged outstanding for its achievements in 'Carbon Footprint Accounting', 'Accounting for Climate Change' and 'Regulation of Corporate Social and Environment Behaviour', winning three out of 12 categories in an awards programme designed to benchmark best practices in CSR areas such as the environment, community development, health, education, and fair trade.

Jerry Hsu, CEO, DHL Express Asia Pacific, said: "As the world's leading mail and logistics group, DP DHL acknowledges that as well as being an economic growth and prosperity driver by delivering goods and information to all corners of the globe, our activities impact the environment. DHL was the first global logistics company to offer a carbon neutral shipping service. Called DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral (Note 1), it calculates the carbon emissions generated by each shipment and offsets these emissions by reinvesting in recognized climate protection projects such as hydropower, biomass or wind energy."

DHL was the first global logistics provider to set quantified carbon dioxide (CO2) efficiency targets and it is on track to beat its target of improving the carbon efficiency of DHL operations and its transport subcontractors by 30 percent by 2020, compared to 2007. In 2011, DHL achieved record improvements of CO2 efficiency (Note 2) with results up 21 percent compared to 2010 for its Express division in Asia-Pacific, despite increases in volume due to the continued economic recovery.

Kelvin Leung, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding Asia Pacific, said: "Carbon Footprint Accounting has been integrated into DP DHL's Corporate Strategy 2015 and the DHL GoGreen program has been globally recognised for setting new benchmarks in green logistics. Regionally all our business units have set up systems and processes to monitor CO2 and environmental performance on a monthly basis for identification, tracking of industry trends and improvements. We are serious in our commitment to sustainability and are honoured to have been recognized for it by CMO."

DHL began assessing carbon footprint in the Asia Pacific from energy consumption in real estate and ground transport to measure and improve carbon efficiency through abatement programs in 2008, and now covers over 1,000 facilities in 27 markets.

Paul Graham, CEO, DHL Supply Chain Asia Pacific, said: "Leadership for us includes being at the forefront of environmental protection and it is a key component of our business strategy with the obvious primary focus of controlling CO2 emissions and climate protection. We view climate change as an opportunity to demonstrate innovation within the logistics industry and create a competitive advantage through working closely with customers to develop greener supply chain solutions."

This is the second CMO Asia Best CSR Practices Awards, launched to recognise corporations that have a significant and positive impact on communities, environment and people. A US-based organization dedicated to high-level knowledge exchange, thought leadership and peer networking among senior corporate marketing leaders across a wide range of global industries, the CMO Council has 6,000 members who control more than US$300 billion in aggregated annual marketing expenditures and over 20,000 global executives in over 100 countries.
