Green Certification for CEIBS Shanghai Campus Phase 3

SHANGHAI, November 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The China Europe International Business School's Shanghai Campus Phase 3 has been certified as a green project. By achieving LEED Gold standard, the second highest ranking, CEIBS becomes the first business school in China, and one of the very few across the world to achieve this certification for a stand-alone campus.

"Having a green campus ties in with our deep commitment to sustainable development and responsible leadership," says CEIBS Vice President and Co-Dean Professor Zhang Weijiong.

Efforts to have Phase 3 become a green campus can be traced back to 2007, when a handful of MBA students launched the Green Campus Initiative. Over the years other students continued their work and by 2010 one of the major goals was ensuring that the end result of the campus expansion project would be a green building. CEIBS' Management Committee threw its support behind the push for LEED certification.

LEED Gold indicates that CEIBS Shanghai Campus Phase 3 has achieved impressive results in areas such as site sustainability (21 out of 26 points), innovation in design (5 out of 6) and water efficiency (a perfect score of 10). CEIBS relies heavily on innovative wastewater technology to maintain the tranquil pools of water that surround the campus' signature glass pyramid. An on-site treatment facility converts 180 tonnes of waste water per day, and through that and other initiatives the school saves 54,000 tonnes of potable water each year. There are also energy saving initiatives across the campus, including a key card system that ensures that all lights are turned off when students leave their dorm rooms.

Phased use of Shanghai Campus Phase 3 began on July 1 this year, with on-going work on a multi-purpose 722-seat conference centre that will be completed for the school's 20th anniversary next November. The Shanghai Municipal Government - which partnered with the European Union in the joint venture that launched CEIBS almost 20 years ago - provided financial assistance for the expansion project. The campus' third phase was added to meet the needs of an ever-expanding student base. When the first two phases were built (between 1998 and 2008 at a cost of RMB 250 million) CEIBS welcomed about 700 students a year for all programmes combined. Today, there are 700 students in the EMBA programme alone.
