SINGAPORE, Aug. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- In recent years, catastrophe bonds, life settlements and other insurance-linked securities (ILS) have emerged as an important new asset class for investors looking to diversify their portfolio and take advantage of a non-correlated asset.

The Tohoku earthquake, in combination with events in Australia and New Zealand, had a much greater and immediate impact on the traditional reinsurance market, where rates have increased significantly for Cat-exposed property lines.

Besides, the Asian governments are also moving forward to develop insurance linked products. The Chinese government is planning the Shanghai Insurance Exchange to facilitate insurance linked products on the market. And some Korean insurance companies are also actively looking for some good opportunities to develop ILS in Korea.

On the other hand, ILS is an attractive option for international speakers in terms of the risk diversification which it provides, and Asian investors are being aware of this also.

Due to the activity that is being seen in the ILS Asian markets, industry expert Dr. Luzi Hitz, speaker at the 3rd Annual ILS Asia conference and CEO of Perils AG, stated: “There are two main opportunities for ILS in Asian market. The first is securitization of insurance risk. This is mainly driven by the size of an insurance market. The risk capital needs of small markets…” The impact of the Japan earthquake on the industry is also discussed in the interview available on the event website.

IQPC’s 3rd Annual Insurance-Linked Securities Asia conference will bring together the authorities, investors, insurance and reinsurance companies and fund managers to explore and discuss the current and future challenges in insurance-linked securities development in Asia and update you the market changes after the Japan earthquake.
