Petroleum Geoscientists Flock to Kuala Lumpur to Consolidate on the Energy Business

Asia Petroleum Geoscience Conference and Exhibition 2015 (APGCE 2015)

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Sept. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Amidst the skeptical outlook on the current oil and gas price environment, world renowned geoscientists are taking it upon their stride to contribute to a positive outlook in the industry's future. Through over 100 Technical & Poster Sessions, the stage is set for Asia's Premier Geoscience Event, which sets to take place in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur from 12 to 13 October.

"Especially in current low oil price environment, the multi-disciplinary approach has significantly reduced the risk of developing the field while significantly adding to the reserves and thus reducing the cost per barrel of the development," commented Steven Courteney of Murphy Oil, a Special Session speaker on integrating geoscience with other disciplines.

"Despite the current challenges, uncertainties and budgetary constraints affecting oil and gas exploration, geoscientists should never be afraid and should always be encouraged to speak with passion about the exploration prospects that excited them," expressed Mike Buck of Salamander Energy, whom will be talking at the Special Session focusing on the challenges and opportunities faced by the oil and gas industry in exploring new prospects especially in South-East Asia.

"We hope to raise awareness amongst geoscientists that good well planning and a sound geotechnical assessment of the subsurface above the actual drilling target deserves more attention than it commonly granted," said Jan Rindschwentner of SapuraKencana Energy, a moderator for another Special Session which will delve into geoscience's role in safe and cost effective drilling.

"We also hope to inspire more integration between geoscientists and drillers as both groups are not only separated through their different working methods, but also by the distance between working locations. Successful geoscientist and driller collaboration provides significant advantages," Jan Rindschwentner added.

In order to achieve a more complete earth model, Trey Meckel of Matrix Capital Petroleum echoed the importance of integration across the value chain "Today, we have a multitude of highly sophisticated geological, geophysical, petrophysical, geochemical, and engineering tools and data available to us; however, in order to achieve maximum benefit from them, companies require conscientious and creative integration across disciplines and departments."

Exclusive appearances will also be made by venerated Technical Gurus such as Paul Tapponnier, Head of Tectonics and Earthquake Research at Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), Professor Robert Hall, the Director of the South East Asia Research Group at Royal Holloway University of London and Professor Bilal Haq, a world renowned geoscientist. Beyond the conference hall confines, they will also join the event's Field Trips including an excursion to the Shallow Marine & Deepwater Outcrops in Labuan Island and Kota Kinabalu to examine the facies of West Crocker formation and discuss the Petroleum Potential of The NW Sabah basin.

The newly introduced Core Session will showcase an exciting series of representative cores from Malaysian basins, while the Prospect Forum at the Exhibition area will open a vibrant marketplace for international development deals to flourish.

With the presence of PETRONAS playing Host, as well as other industry majors such as ExxonMobil, Halliburton, ConocoPhillips, CGG, Mubadala, Murphy and Shell among others, APGCE 2015 will open doors for geoscience ideas and innovation to flourish as well as tightening the bond among industry players for collaborative efforts on future hydrocarbon and business prospects.
