RICS HK Annual Conference 2010 Brings Global Insights on Waterfront Development

HONG KONG, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Hong Kong Annual Conference was successfully held at the Conrad Hong Kong Hotel on September 11, the event was attended by over 200 participants consisting of many top executives from the government, property, surveying, planning and engineering fields.

Mrs Carrie Lam, Secretary for Development of the HKSAR Government opened the event with an insightful speech, she outlined the challenges that Hong Kong is facing in revitalising its extensive harbourfront and how the government is seeking to overcome these challenges and she  welcomes proposals from RICS on ways to utilise effective Public Private Partnerships.  

RICS Hong Kong Chairman, Mr David Faulkner, said, “The Conference provided many valuable insights into the practical issues facing both waterfront and PPP projects around the world. Based on this experience, RICS Hong Kong will be preparing a paper for the HKSAR Government and will look forward to providing input as the various projects along the harbourfront progress.”

International experts from the UK and Spain were present to share with the audiences the overseas experiences on the application of Public Private Partnership to the harbourfront development and management. The panel discussion, moderated by Mr Nicholas Brooke, Chairman of Harbourfront Committee, HKSAR and Past President of RICS, advocated discussions and debates amongst overseas speakers and local panel experts including Mr Guy Bradley, Chief Operating Officer -- Hong Kong, Swire Properties Ltd. and Mr David Roberts, Chief Executive Officer, Aedas Ltd.

The panel discussion sought to investigate how these overseas experiences can be applied to the current situation in Hong Kong and highlighted the issues that will need to be addressed if Hong Kong is to achieve success in waterfront development through Public Private Partnerships, thus enhancing its status as a leading world city.

Mr Ong See Lian, RICS Global President-Elect 2010/2011, said, “This is the second annual conference, organised by RICS Hong Kong, having built on the success of the 2009 inaugural event on urban renewal strategy.  Leveraging on RICS’ global network, this annual conference will become one of RICS’ flagship events focusing on issues relevant to Hong Kong’s property sector while bringing in an international perspective.”
